Hi

I have a RHD ( UK based) 2006 E320 CDI sport with what I assume are factory-fit HID Headlamps. DS1 35w Phillips Bulb and Ballasts

The drivers side dipped headlamp is off permanently. I have swapped the bulb and base unit ( I believe this is referred to as the ballast) with the working side but that still doesnt work so I have eliminated the bulb and base unit. I have tried locating the fuse but it doesnt show on the MB Fuse diagram. I then assumed the fuse would be located in the engine compartment fuse box ( as MB do not show that in their fuse chart) but all those fuses are Ok.

Also the ballast unit on the non-working side does not locate within the headlamp unit with a solid twist and click as with the other side

Can anyone help ?. Just so you know I am not that technical

Thanks in advance

This could be the ECU control that has failed

Many thanks

Would you happen to know where the ECU control is located and is it repairable

It could have one of these numbers, it could be in the headlamp or just under it if you follow the wires. these are very cheap on Ebay

A big one
The fuses covering the lamps are in the engine bay fuse box but all relevant fuses cover both sides.

Many thanks

Valuable advice as many other non-MB HID systems seem to infer a fuse for each headlamp

Thank you very much for this. I will use my very limited Motor DIY skills and see if this cures my problem

Hi,
As your ballast does not locate with a solid click/twist I would try the units from the duff side in the good side just to be sure where the fault lies, if then it doesn,t work the fault should lie in the ignitor box, which on other MB's is,nt replaceable as it comes as part of the headlight assembly and is located inside the headlight. Though not sure of the set up on the 211.
If you need any Xenon parts for it take a look at this web site and drop them a mail of your requirements,

Many thanks Andy. I think this most likely the problem but I think a headlamp replacement is beyond my DIY skills. Looks like the MB dealer beckons

Cheers

If you need to remove the headlamp the bumper has to come off, I would avoid MB on this for they will just fit a new headlamp at £1k plus fitting

Strange how a bill of £1k suddenly makes diy so appealing.

Many thanks for anll your advice. It transpired to be a weather-beaten ECU unit ( as Television had stated)/ I used a very efficient mobile Mercedes service, Mercanix, that came the next day and fitted a refurb unit for 150.00.
