Morning all

I've just changed the front tyres on my C180 to Michelin Pilot Primacy's (got a decent pair with good tread on the bay). Had them balanced etc but I get a strange humming sound at speeds over 50mph. I've read that this tyre is quite noisy and I can live with it, as long as it's nothing dangerous. Day to day driving is in town at low speeds.

Anyone had any similar experiences?

My car has the Sport Pack with the Adharaz alloys and big brakes.

If the tyre has the big V pattern, then these can be noisy tyres

+1 I have V-grooved tyres on the front and they were awful. Swapped them to the back and noise much reduced. Never buying again (these are Uniroyals FWIW)

That's the culprit. Not a full V pattern, just the inside half.

The Primacy doesn't have the big V pattern tread. I ran these tyres for a couple of years on my S203. I don't recall any humming from the tyres. They were a very good all-round tyre and quiet, even when worn.

Sorry I was supposed to have said half V or a sort of half V on the inside edge:lol:

Any thoughts of the ideal tyre for the car with this Sport Pack? What was OE when new?

I wasn't correcting you zars, we posted together!

My S203 came on Primacy tyres MO labelled, although I didn't replace with MO labelled, I didn't notice any difference in performance/comfort/noise. Got approx 20k miles from a set, all four wearing evenly.

Those tyres are directional I think are they fitted to the correct sides

Not directional but asymetric, they should be marked Inner/Outer or Inside/Outside

The tyres are marked with an 'Outside' marking and they have been put onto the wheels correctly. However do they have to be put on the car on the right sides? (excuse the numpty question)

Yes I know what asymmetric is, there are tyres around that are directional , that is they have an arrow on the side wall pointing in the direction of rotation, I had those on the SL and on the V70

And the Primacy isn't directional

Checked last night and the tyres have been put on correctly with an opposite tread pattern as mentioned in the thread in the link.

Having done some more nosing about on the net it does seem these particular tyres are a bit noisy so beginning to think it's a characteristic. I can live with it and turn the volume up on the radio;) As long as it's nothing dangerous.

The seller has agreed to refund what I paid for them but I have to drop them back to him which means a trip round the A406  But perhaps that's a small price to pay for peace of mind:confused:

I'll keep you posted. Thanks for all your input, much appreciated.

Chaps, had the tyres changed yesterday and the humming sound has gone. The Michelins had dips in them, probably caused by bad shocks apparently.
Have returned them and got a refund.

So alls well now. Again thanks for your assistance.
