E vs C class question

I'm in the mood for something economical and I've narrowed it down to two vehicles...

2002 E220 Avantgarde, nice spec with a factory sunroof and xenons and with 61000 miles - black on black (newer shape).

Or

2004 C270 Avantgarde similar spec but sans sunroof and xenons. 68000 miles, again black on black.

My budget is between 5 and 6k and both these fit the budget - I'd appreciate everyone's thoughts, especially on the E as I've never had one before.

if economical is the prime requirement then go for the smaller lighter car, i.e. the C class.

It would seem that the diesel MPG difference between the two is negligible (and an obvious improvement on my current 3.2 petrol)

Plus 2years less corrosion, less likely to have a valeo rad, galvanised plus nano paint so it's got a chance of not rusting.

Plus the 203 C was well established and bugs ironed out but an early 211 stinks of potential money pit.
