E320 CDI Avantgarde 2007
Hi

I own a 2007 E320 CDI with 104K miles on the clock. Today, whilst trying to accelerate it started to what I can only describe as stutter - not in a funny noisy kind of way, but in the feel of it, almost as if it was trying to accelerate, but couldn't. Getting from 30mph to 40mph seemed to take forever even with my foot down and whilst depressing my foot for a bit, it eventually accelerated like it normally does. I've read a couple of old threads started on here from a couple of years ago and the consensus was that it might be the MAF. Any ideas from any experts on here and the average price of a MAF should I need one? I was starting to worry that it was going to break down! Any help - or ideas of what else it could be, if not the MAF - would be extremely grateful. Many thanks, Jo-anne :)

Your car is equipped with the later 642 engine and has x2 MAF sensors located in the air truncking on top of the engine. These have so far proven to be very reliable in comparison to earlier systems. It seems you may have a throttle response issue, although its difficult to understand from your original post. Is it only between 30-40 mph? And is it whilst asking for instant throttle response? Ie foot hard down
It could be an early sign of inlet port shut off motor failure

Thanks for that reply. It has only happened once and I've yet to drive it today to see what happens, but it appeared to be only between 30 and 40mph. I was trying to accelerate and my foot wasn't to the floor, but when it didn't respond as it should, putting my foot to the floor didn't do anything either. What you said it could be sounds expensive! :( Will drive it later today and see what it does and will report back.

Hi, i'e the same problem with my 124, series its a 1992 model 230ce,fantastic on motorwas but accelarating from a standing start is awful, had the throttle control body cleaned and fuel mixture analyzed and reset but its still the same.hope somebody can pinpoint the problem before an expensive trial and error path is taken, best of luck.

I will take fist guess, at the Y100/1 positioner or vanes jamming.

My husband has been out in it this morning. Did the same with him - between 30 and 40. However, stamping the throttle on the floor, it goes through all the gears no problem at all. However, just cruising at 35 and then putting your foot down, the car doesn't seem to know which gear to find - like a long delay and then away it goes. He seems to think it might be a throttle positioning sensor, like on his Volvo, but he's not sure on a Mercedes? Where is, and how much, is an inlet port shut off motor? Thanks!

The port motor is located underneath the turbo. Turbo has to be removed to replace it. I would try and get someone with a star machine to run a diagnostic test for you before replacing any components

Thanks for that. I've got a lad who does the diagnostics on our Volvo looking at it tomorrow. If he doesn't find anything, I'll book it in to our local Mercedes specialist to have a look. Will update - hopefully with good news - as soon as I get to know anything. :)

With Alex on this one or possibly the signs of the exhaust manifolds breaking up sending debris through the turbo.

STAR test is the way forward and depending on fault codes depends on what advice we could give next

Went out in it myself yesterday teatime and it was fine. Went out again this morning and again, it was fine. Got the guy to put the diagnostics kit onto it and a couple of fault codes came up, but he said none that he'd expect for the problem I was having. He had a test drive in it and it was picking up fine. There were no fault codes came up for transmission and certainly no codes regarding the MAF. He said it could be something as simple as picking up some dirty diesel, but as no codes came up regarding the fuel filter, he suggested I run it for a couple of days to see if it happens again and fetch it back should it work itself again for another diagnostics!

Just a query though guys, when I had the initial problem with it, no warning lights came up on the dash. If it is a MAF issue or early indication of inlet port shutoff motor failure, would a light not come up for those?

Well - I've driven it all week with no problems. Mainly short journeys but a long one yesterday. It's driving as normal now! Hopefully it was nothing I need to worry about - fingers crossed! :)

If (if) it was the manifold breaking up, sending metal shards through the turbo, you have had a lucky escape.
However, it will happen again, and new turbos are very expensive.

What were those ignored fault codes?
