I'm noticing a lot of these on the market these days in good condition, under 100k and for a decent price.

Any opinions on;

1. Reliability
2. Maintenance costs
3. Driving and Ownership Impressions.

Keep in mind I particularly want a diesel and a wagon.

Currently running a 1994 W124 E220 and she's running well. But wife thinks it's time to upgrade.

The W124 is a 7-seater though and the new ones don't have that option. Which is one demerit for the W211

Crap reliability from the diesel V6 and 7g box is my experience of them. Many faults can happen with that engine a d the box can pose expensive electroplate issues.

Other than that they are really lovely cars

What?

That's not true, at least in Europe. Plenty of used European S211s are 7-seaters. Get up to speed on the S211 with the brochure and price list from the time.

Thanks for the info.

Apparently MB decided to omit the 7-seat option in the Japan market for the 211 and 212.

It's not a legal issue though since the W124 and W210 both had them.

Best car I have ever owned, and really not sure why I sold it. Stupid move.

I had mine at 3 years old for nearly 2 years and sold it with 105k mikes on it.

Only issue I had was glow plug 1 and 3 needed replacing. Regular servicing and it was good as gold.
I averaged 35mpg which was fine, could drop to 30 round town and see as much as 48mpg on a steady 60mph run.

Mine had a Brabus tuning box on it so was plenty quick enough for every day and safe overtaking.

Extremely comfy car and I will own another.

Swapped for an E350 cdi S212 and tried to gel with it for 6 months and couldn't, no where near as nice apart from the looks, but think the 211 is dating far better, still got some elegant lines, the 212 looks modern, but that is not a great thing for long term appeal imho.

Friend just sold his E270cdi estate for £3800, I was gutted when he told me that. It had done 160k miles but full Merc history and never put a foot wrong, plus he had suspension all changed around 30k miles ago, so was a nice tight car still. I would have jumped on that.

I love my S211, only thing that worries me is the damn SBC unit.... It's like having a ticking bomb under the bonnet.

Love mine too, Had it 4 months now and its the greatest family car we have owned to date.
Im also worried about the SBC but it seems fine at the moment mine has 126k on clock and feels/Drives and looks like a new car, they really do wear well, the interior on mine looks brandnew!
Oh and the V6 CDI absolutely flies in standard form (I ACTUALLY THOUGHT IT HAD BEEN MAPPED BUT ITS STANDARD) it is quicker than my old E46 Bmw 330d Touring with a re--map, and the torque it has pins you into the seat when you need the power
