corroded wheels

Hello All,

I need to refurbish my alloy wheels as they are corroded.
I would appreciate some advice on what is the best way to refurb them. One garage owner I spoke to said he would clean them first, sand them down and them would paint and polish/lacquer them. he would not acid treat them.

Is this correct? should they not be acid treated to get rid of the corrosion?

Take them to a specialist refurb outfit.

A quick search would give many options

That would not last 10 mins as the paint is too soft, thes are my 140 wheels that I had powder coated

That outfit may do a reasonable job , but it is only a franchise after all, other firms that run there own wheel refurbishing business have to take a greater care to stay in business, it might cost £20 more but in most cases its worth it.

I have never been that impressed with the wheelspecialist when it come to the small details.

Indeed it could depend on the individual operator regardless of whether a franchise or two man business., but my direct experience of the wheel specialist was 100% positive - excellent job

They are one of the best

What some folk do not realize is that it is not just a "little of powder and a little bit of paint". When you go to a real wheel specialist, they will spin the wheels and offer to remove any small dents and imperfections, the wheel specialist do not do this at the 2 branches that I have visited. This makes a difference as to the amount of weights need to balance and run smoothly on the car. I saw defects also on the sample wheels so again many may not notice this, but I do.

This is particularly true of polished designs that aren't painted, but just laquered.

The Rimstock group use a lacquer that is guarenteed for 12 months and all rims are remachined after stripping.

A powder coat finish will last longer and certainly when I need to get my polished rims redone I'll just have them painted.

Yes and true, the alli is cut with a diamond that gives a finish unlike any other, I have been experimenting with re doing some rime damage on this finish, but near on impossible to match up.

I have just ordered some ground alli powder to mix with some 2k clear coat to see what the effect is.

Be careful. I gather that some of the base coats/preparations for clear lacquer can cause the alloy to take on a green tinge. Many don't apply a base coat at all and thats one reason why the diamond cut wheels are so prone to corrosion.

In deed it does change the colour, that is why I am trying to mix some ground alli in it to off set the colour change.

have done loads of refurbs on all MB rims wether diamond cut or just silver
finish, I use solvent base coat and high grade 2K lacquer to give the perfect finish and lasting protection

Thank you Clive, if I was going to keep them then I would, I hate them they are 20" I will Ebay them in the new year
