Best to remove a kick panel under the dash and push it out from the rear, not sure if it will clear the steering wheel on a non adjustable one

Try it,it may come out far enough, handy if you get the bulbs first from MB

If you have to remove the airbag, do not turn the ignition on or it will put the warning lamp on

The pod is held in the two fixings located at 10 & two O clock looking face on.

You can buy the removal tool but I made a couple from wire coat hangers.

Easy to do, two hooks at one end about the size of a penny then a hole at the other to put something through to help pull.

Slide both down at the same time then twist slightly to engage the fixing then pull - it's fiddly to get both at the same time, but will come out eventually.

Cheers for the info the coat hanger trick didn't work but it didn't take long to remove the lower panel and push the dash out from behind, there was enough clearance to get it out with out removing the stg wheel
Blooming typical tho put the dash back in and half the other bulbs blew prob from being old and bumped around

Sorry, my post above should have read "as an alternative to Malcolm's suggestion"

I have the odd bulb go but nothing like a good clump doesn't fix ;)

The only problem with using the pullers is you run the risk of cracking the bezel

I have found pushing it from behind a better option nothing worse then trying to replace a broken dash clocks

So right, the glass on a 129 is near on £200 now, the 140 is the only real safe one where there are dedicated slots for the hooks

I've removed the cluster on a W202 using the official pulling tools. The only danger with pushing the cluster from behind is that you can cut your hands to shreds due to sharp edges present in the area under the steering column.

You are right in that you have to be careful. 202's, however, are the worst model for cracking for no reason. I always advise getting a tin of silicone spray with a straw attached to the top. Gently squeeze a plastic panel removal tool between the dash and cluster both top and bottom, and spray some silicone on the rubbers. Leave for a minute then use the pulling hooks!!!

It works a treat :D

This is the guide I followed a while back.

The area where you need to get the hooks engaged is shown in red.

You remind me of 202fan, you are always on 202 threads and never once on a S class thread, you use the same words too:confused:

But television, you are on every thread, giving advice & telling people how to do things without the benefit of one minute of MB training or experience working on these cars in a dealer or independent.

No that's not right, not a confidence trickster. More of an armchair expert based on an ability to copy & paste diagrams off an out of date version of MB's EPC.

Whatever you are, it is well know that to pull a W140 instrument binnacle out of it's resting place using the MB pulling tools will very often lead to expensive damage. Ask one of the indies on here!
