does the auxillary heater (great feature) use the normal battery or it's own battery ? i'm wondering as surely it must draw a lot of power when it's on and that might be a bad idea if the battery is low....

They are normally diesel powered and sit under the front wing

Yes the MB ones are built in, when I was over there we had the mains electric ones that you plugged into at home or at work.

Some MB's have the battery powered block heaters, if your was a factory fitment, it will be on that data card

The most common where you are these days is the diesel one under the wing

There is always such confusion over these heaters..

There are 3 types -

Auxiliary heater, diesel powered and mounted in the front wing
Block heater, a mains powered "kettle element" fitted into engine block
Heater Booster, electric heater fitted into the heater system, heats the incoming air. Powered from the car battery

The 211 will have the booster and can be optioned with the Aux and or the block heaters

Aux heater is SA code 228 on the datacard

EDIT - My apologies on the 211 the Aux heater is the one I described as the booster, it's a 1700w ceramic element heater. Told you it's confusing, terminology keeps chnaging...

EPC describes the under wing heater as "Independant heater", logical really...

Reading WIS reveals SA228 is termed "Stationary heater" - the diesel powered version.

So again, inconsistent in the extreme.

The same document also uses the term "Auxiliary heater" (code H12) when describing the diesel powered version..

Diesel powered coolant (auxiliary) heater.

And yes, it draws electric (fuel pump) from the main battery, several amps during the operation! General instruction is, that you should drive as many minutes as you have had the auxiliary heater on before the start. This because in overall but especially in cold conditions, battery cannot be charged very quickly even during the engine running.

Aux heater is prevented to start if battery voltage is too low, or if the fuel tank is at reserve.

W211 diesels also have that heater booster as a standard, which heats incoming air. And it's not separated in SA's, I think.

Edit: of course you can use charger like CTEK to maintain the charge of the battery while docked in home.

anyweb.
My car seems to have the same system as yours, Option 228. As per my thread on the subject.
My owner’s manual is in German so if you know how to operate the system could you let me know please as & cant understand it from the manual. I am hoping the system can be programmed to come on at a pre-set time & not just on/off via the remote. But not figured it out yet.

I have an S211 320CDI 2004 MY, will that have the heater booster as standard?

What is this heater booster, how does it work and how/can I control it?

Thanks

Yep, I believe it is standard also in UK models.

You cannot control it, it will turn automatically on when air con need to warm up the cabin (detected cabin temp lower than desired temp from ac panel). It is located in cabin aircon duct, where it is heating incoming air.
