Hi All

I have a stuck injector, see picture!

injector stuck.JPG

The head of the injector had to be cut off in order to remove the cam cover and get to the head bolts.

It would not come out with an injector removal tool - wouldn't budge at all.

I have soaked it in carb cleaner for days and have had a 24" spanner on it and can't loosen it or rotate.

Does anyone have any suggestions before I attempt a last resort of drilling it out? I'm a little worried about doing this and damaging the head.

Many thanks

If the head is off, can't you attempt to drift/knock it out from the combustion chamber end?

Edit, or is it still screwed down in its thread?

Thanks for the reply. I've tried drifting it out but the injection end is very small and difficult to get a drift to stay. Maybe if I drill it a little I can get better purchase.

This won't be a big help, but I once read from finnish mb forum that they have used some kind of inductive/electric heater (or welding machine type?) to heat up the injector body, and then managed to pull it away. Of course problem is that if injector body is hotter than cylinder head, are the tolerances 'wrong way', but clearance should be so large that it doesn't matter. Instead the tar in between the hole and body will be more fluid and shouldn't be so adhesive.
Good luck.

Thanks for the tips.

Sheffield is a little out of my way but thanks for the offer!

I'll try some stilsons and heating it this evening first.

Hi get some heat in to the injector red hot
Turn head over and grip injector in a bench
vice a good one with good jaws, turn the head
by hand don't snap it of at this stage let it cool
down try again in the vice rotate clock & anticlockwise
Take it out of vice give the injector a whack with a
hammer as to knock it further in this could compress
the copper washer seal in the bottom of the hole
Your trying to move it but only minutely slowly slowly
catch a monkey, put it back in vice try rotating the head
with you hands, if it shears off it doesn't matter at
this stage as it will need to be machined out the head
will not be scrap, some one local could easily drill/bore/mill
it out.
I can machine it out I'm 165 miles from you
Get back to us ASAP

Kev

Edit the picture look like you have turned it slightly
if so turn it the other way

Vice is a great idea and I just realised I've lost my Stilsons!

I'll give it a go and report back. If it doesn't work then it's off to the machine shop!

Thanks

Do not warm the cylinder head up with a blow torch pleeeeeeeeease!!!!!!!!!
Applying heat directly to the injector will help although it goes against the laws of physics
Heat the injector while trying to turn it and you may have joy. Although I don't think so :(
But good luck!!!!

I was a little worried about warping the head. I'll try a lot of heat on the injector first and try the vice method first and then off to find a machine shop near Cirencester to mill it out I expect!

As WG has said do not, in any circumstance apply blow torch heat to the head. You will definately wreck it then.

Im just wondering what the OP has tried to remove the injector so far because in all my years of working on MBs, I have never had a problem in removing injectors, even the most stubborn, some take more time, effort and skill than others but I have always removed them. If you have the right tools they should come out, eventually.

^ I was actually a little disappointed. I hoped they would come out of there like two bullets out of a rifle!

Ive seen those monkeys on that video before, they obviously didnt hear of the special tool that works an absolute treat on A classes. I hope that kind of practice doesnt go on in any garage.
