Hi everyone.

I am new to the forum, so I hope that this is in the correct section. ;)

I have just bought a 1992 W124 200e. It came fitted with a Becker Le mans 2000 head unit. (See pic.) From what I have seen this unit cannot have the CD changer retro fitted. I have decided that I want to fit a more up to date head unit that can take MP3's etc. Nothing fancy though.

I have a couple of questions though:

1. What size speakers are fitted in the dash and the rear? I think I will need to replace those too.
2. Will I still be able to make use of the fader control in the centre console, or should I just by pass it?
3. Depending on the head unit, will I still be able to make use of the electric aerial?

Another reason for the change, is that I am unable to find a user manual for the Becker. Also I accidently lost power to the Becker, so now it wants a code. I know that I will have to contact my local dealer here in South Africa with my VIN number to get the code.

Have a great week .
Craig

.... too many cars!
Hi, I fitted my E220 with a modern 'Bluetooth enabled' unit. Its a Sony unit and it fitted easily with an ISO adapter in the loom. I didnt change the speakers as they are superb quality as standard but I think they are 4 1/2 inch - dont quote me though! The aerial worked no problem with the new radio but I dont know about the fader as I dont have one of those but I cant see why it wouldn't work

I also did a straight swap from the original radio to a sony with mp3, mine just plugged straight in aerial worked as normal:D

Just my opion, but....

If you are fitting a more modern high power set then you would want to bypass the fader as it won't handle the power and it will sound rubish.

I did it with mine. You should be able to find all 4 pairs of speaker wires near the fader to make life easier.

Good luck and yes, keep the Becker.

Agreed on the above my original unit was stolen and when it was " adapted " for a standard unit by a specialist paid for by the insurance Co thats what they did .

Hi everyone

Thanks for all the feedback. I will definitely hang onto the Becker unit. Just need to find a user manual for it. Does anyone know where I could locate one? The car did not come with any manuals. I have since found a copy of the owners manual, but the radio section is not the same.

As for the speakers, why I think I have to replace them is that before the radio lost power, the sound was kind of crackly. It could be bad connections somewhere. Will have to remove the grills and investigate further.

Regards
Craig

Hi there

Thanks for the link. I have already looked at this, but cant seem to work it out. The radio has an 8 digit serial number that starts with a letter. The links in your post only allow for a 4 digit number to be entered. So which 4 digits do I enter? Also the links do not allow for a letter to be used.

I will still contact the dealer, but have to wait until the car is officially in my name. I only bought the car last Saturday in a private sale. It is going for the roadworthy test (MOT) today. Then I can go to the licence department to get it officially in my name.

Hi all

I'm back!! Hope everyone has had a great start to the year! :D

To cut a long story short, the car is finally in my name, so I contacted MB SA to get the code for my radio. After proving who I was and the vehicle is legally mine, I got sent the code. Great! Ummm not so great.... :(

My problem is this, The code sent that was sent to me is a 4 digit number that includes a digit I cannot see how to enter on my radio. That digit is a "9". As a result of too many attempts, the radio now displays 4 dashes (_ _ _ _).

So now I have two questions:
1. How long must I wait before I can try enter the code again?
2. How do I enter that code with that pesky "9" on my radio?

Any help would be gladly appreciated.

Regards

I do not think there is any way to get a 9 in, nice radio though.

I forget the waiting times now :( I had one in my 124 and I had a radio guy take out the coding chip and fit a new one, a simple job with just 8 legs and had my own code
