I have the chance to buy a 1978 280SL Auto, 98k on the clock, this would be my first Mercedes. It has 7 months mot but hasn't been used since 2/12. it was a bit damp smelling inside and the drivers carpet was very wet. It ran well and the auto box shifted cleanly as best I could see/hear although I didn't get a road test. There is some rust in the engine bay especially around the nearside suspension strut top. The car is probably about condition 3. Firstly are there any major weak points or things I should be looking out for and can anybody give a rough idea of value. All advice appreciated.

Trying using the search facility for "107" or "R107". That should bring back lots of results

You don't state the price on offer, but from the information given I'd have to assume that the car hides some problems that you will have to rectify soon, especially evident by it having a leaky roof somewhere.

With rust around the top mounts I'd be expecting structural rust elsewhere. Expect it in the floor pan as well if the roof has been leaking for some time.

If you are buying it for around £2500 or so, fine, but dont spend too much on doing it up as it sounds like it will never be worth much. If you want a really nice one, then spend good money on one in the first place.

Rethink

Thanks for the info, on reflection I have probably been a bit harsh on my consideration of the condition, it is more like condition 2, but I think I'll give it a miss anyway. I just had those nagging doubts. Ta guys.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS its a money pit! The damp floor probably means there a several holes in the bulkhead means it needs a major stripdown and rebuild.
