Sprinter 413CDI 2005
Hello to everyone,

I am a newbe in a bit of bother with my 2005 413CDI Sprinter. It is ex police and as such has loads of extras like a diesel night heater for the interior, coach lights etc. However none of them are usable as the switch panel from the overhead console (police special) was removed, though all of the wiring is in place.

I have a few questions:

1. Does anyone know of a similar Ex Police Sprinter being broken up for spares?

2. Does anyone know which company covert the vans for the police?

The van is perfect for my needs but just needs finishing off.

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried a Mercedes specialist on your area?

Unfortunately I live in the Pyrenees (its snowing). The switches would not have been a Mercedes standard fit, probably all put in at the same time as the Sprinter was converted for the Police. But thank you anyway :)

Often Mercedes do the special fittings for Police / special vehicles, certainly parts are listed on EPC for Police and Taxi version.

Perhaps try a dealer near you?

Can't other switches be used, try putting up a picture of the affected area and wiring.

Look for a body builder identification plate.
Many different companies build for different forces and tender to win the contract.

Many thanks for all of the suggestions above. The vehicle was converted by MacNellie who I have contacted this morning. I hope their response will result in a positive outcome.

Now having spend £120.00 on replacement switches and the switch housing etc I still cant get anything to work, however I have removed the front seats to chase the electrics and have found that there is an auxiliary fuse strip where what I believe are the live inputs are all dead. The wires are separated (thick battery type, and they feed through to where there was probably an auxiliary battery. I have found the connector to the main battery and it goes to what looks like some form of duel terminal isolator or fuse terminal that is under the left passenger seat directly next to a round hole in the seat box facing the door.

Has anyone any experience of these - because the two terminals are exposed and would make the circuit if joined?

If it had a second battery it would have had a split charge facility. The connections you are looking at may be for the split charge relay.

I suspect you will find the Car Wiring Products catalogue very useful

I would go with the split charging theory as well, the converters could probably let you have a wiring diagram if you ask them.

In our work we have Sprinters, Transits, Fiat Ducatos etc, all are coverted to dual batteries and have a battery protection system that cuts the power to stop the battery going completely flat that starts the engine.

As already said, the original company that modified the van will know the answers, we use different companies at each contract. Other than that, motorhomes use these systems more than anyone else, check their forums.

Just purchased ex Police Sprinter too....

Hi Peak Times (and others) :) I have just managed to pick up an ex police 412D sprinter to use as a family wagon/van. I think I was lucky as mine still has all the switching and the overhead box panel in the cab. It also has the isolator cut off under that left passenger seat (near the door) and mine works it seems. I will pop the seats off tomorrow to check the mess underneath but it seems that the majority of my aux lights still work (the two outside spots either side, the interior lamps, the aux heater etc.). Its a great piece of kit - goes really well with the 2.9 lump and being a 1997 model has the last of the non-water based paint I believe (happy to stand corrected if that is not the case). There is little rust on the thing and unusually for a police wagon was owned originally by Hants police for over ten years. Only just run in at 144,000 miles  Peak times - if you want some photos sent of mine as a comparison to see things (switches, lights, wiring etc) then please just ask.

Hi Ive just Purchesed an ex police Sprinter 416 cdi, that i am converting into a motorhome, the electrics have been an absolute nightmare!! so far have pulled out about 10 meters of surpluss wireing that has just been cut off and left in, please post the wiring diagram from MacNellie if you recieve it as it seems to be the same layout as mine.

A few things to look out for as I took the head lining out I noticed some water came out, traced it back to where the police lights had been mounted on the roof what i found was a shock they had only plugged the some of the holes and water started to seep in, quick fix though, I bought 30mmToilet Cistern Blank Plugs Chrome Plated Blacking Off Overflow Cap Bath Sink on ebay and 32mm white rubber washers which should seal all the holes up nicely, with a touch of marine sealant. another tip is remove the door step trims and check for water/ rust as i found mine filled with water, another tip is drill a hole at their lowest point for water to drain out, bear in mind to check underneath first to check that you are not drilling into any brake lines or cables.
