Dear all,

My car's tyres are sort of due for renewal, they were replaced at 104k by the previous owner, and 16k miles later, are starting to show wear and tear - especially as the last few thousand have been completed in the city - with tight parking spots, three point turns etc!

I installed Neuton tyres on my old SAAB 93, but sold the car before I was really able to put any decent mileage on them. I wonder if anyone on here has tried Neuton's NT3000 - which come in the right size for my estate, which is 205 60 15 with a H speed rating.

I cover less than 4000 miles per year, with 75% of driving in town, at speeds well below 35 mph - yes I realise to most, this is torture, but with a new baby, we sometimes actually 'need' to use the car. Things will change in the summer months.

I see that www.W124.co.uk supplies all their cars with Continental Premium Contact IIs, which cost approx. £100 per tyre, fitted, but the Neutons are less than half the price of these, and accordingly, rather tempting. They are sold by NeoBros, whose services I have used before with my SAAB; they are highly rated by them, but I cannot find any reviews online, from the UK, and on the NT3000s.

I note the NT3000 is classed as a summer touring tyre, should this worry me? We plan to take a family holiday in early Jan to Kent which will involve a fair bit of driving.

Any advice from those who have experience of this actual tyre, or brand, would be highly appreciated.

With best wishes as always,
ShivaYash

Neuton tyres are YHI international's [Singapore] own brand they have manufacturing plants in Shanghai and Suzhou in China, Taoyuan in Taiwan and Sepang in Malaysia.
So essentially far east imports. If you are looking for a budget tyre I would recommend Kumhos made in Korea as a good quality budget tyre.

I wouldn't personally with a new baby etc onboard, lots of people do, they are I imagine a ditch finder type tyre.

Don't have to go to the expense of conti on an older car like a 124, but a Kumho or hankook should be fine, I have fitted these recently and the difference is minimal to the v expensive ones and significant away from the few hundred miles I have done on sunny and the like on a spare set of wheels a few years ago

Neuton tyres are well respected by the Saab fraternity

Why do you think these are 'ditch finders'? Facts or otherwise?

For the OP I bought a couple of Syron Race 1 plus tyres which were considerably cheaper than the Pzeros I had on the SL and have been delighted with them ... German made....

Do your research and make your choice... Looking at the reviews I found on this entries they seem ok on the tyre review sites... And as with any tyre some folk will have a bad experience and many good ... But tbh I think it depends how much you control your right foot... Drive sensibly and I am sure they are ok..drive like a nutter on the edge and I doubt it matters what tyres you buy!

.... too many cars!
I have BF Goodrich on the E220 and they have almost 40,000 miles on them now and still legal and still have grip in the wet. Ill be fitting BF Goodrich onto my Passat very shortly as the Conti's have only covered 18,000 miles are are due to change.

The DTM run on them, the KU31 ECSTA SPT is excellent

Many thanks for all the replies. I am particularly interested in the BF Goodrich tyres, however have a question arising. It would take me nearly 10 years to cover 40,000. Surely I should, in the interests of safely repair tyres more often, regardless of mileage covered?

I intend of keeping the W124 going for at least the next 5-7 years.

Best wishes,

If they start to perish you will see it on the side walls with cracking evident and they will fail an MOT - so just make sure you check your tyres regulalry..regardless of how long you have had them for or the mileage used...

You can get the Continentals for £75 / corner fitted. You're going to have them for three years so I'd pay the small extra amount and get the Contis

Wow, that is a great price, from where?

What about the premature wear that someone has commented upon here?

Thanks Nick.

Found goodyear NCT Eagle fuel savers were excellent on my coupe. after 50k miles still had 3-4mm left and the mpg i got was very good. they were only £48 a corner fitted too (though this was a few years back).

FWIW there are no such thing as "ditchfinder" tyres. Any tyre has minimum standards of grip which are far more than you'll ever need/ever had compared to tyres 20 years ago. If you end up putting the car in a ditch it's because you don't understand how to drive and perceive hazards, nothing to do with the tyres. By the same logic you might as well say a W124 with full continentals on is a ditchfinder too because it's braking distance and handling characteristics aren't as good as a Ferrari or Porsche...

I'd hazard a guess that the only "ditchfinder" will be the guy who spends £200 a corner on his premium tyres and then assumes his car has higher grip than before because he paid more for them so they are better, not the guy who realises his Merc estate isn't a sports car and subsequently puts the cheapest tyres he can find on it!

Many thanks, this is what I currently have fitted to my car - the Goodyears and the MPG, for my London driving really isn't too bad, especially when I leave the car at home and use my scooter.

Really appreciate all the input everyone has made on this topic. I feel enlightened and now armed to seek out some good tyres thanks to this forum.

With best wishes,

You'll find the Contis much smoother & quieter than Goodyear NCTs

My local tyre place supplies & fits for me at £75 / corner. I could probably save a tenner on that but I'd rather use a good, local company that looks after me
