2008 E 500 A/G Classic colour combination.
Yesterday I filled up the E 500 for the first time. Today I needed to go and do a job for my aged mother who lives about 32 miles away. There is a real mixture on this journey so it's fairly represetative of my type of trip except the 3 miles to type golf club but there won't be much of that anytime soon.

So about 2 miles to get to the other side of town then A road for about 6 miles a stop at the post office then through that town about a mile 5 miles of A road (40MPH) a little bit of ring road short dual carriageway another bit of ring road then short stretch of A road 5 miles of dual carriageway 79ish MPH and then the last section is all 30's and 40's not too much traffic but plenty of roundabouts and traffic lights. so I reset the OBC on leaving and by the time I got home it was sayin 24.1 MPG since start. Over the moon with that but I know it wont last when I get into the car a little more.

Sounds quite economical. I've been disappointed with the 33.7 overall I've had from my 320cdi and have been re-setting the OBC for various stages of a 60 mile drive I frequently do. Conclusions:

Cold start first 10 miles out of 8 celsius garage rural B roads 30 mpg

Motorway cruise 70 mph 40 mpg

Urban stop start for 3 miles 20 mpg

What has surprised me most is that the motorway cruise figure is not better.

My CL500 is returning 25.8 in very short trips to the shops and back, nearly 4 miles of uphill on a cold engine and total trips of about 8 miles.

The 273 engine is a huge improvement over the old 113, the figure for that was about 17mpg.

It a huge car too and returns over 30 on runs

Its a big increase in power. I drove a 113 S500. Fast, yes very, but not as frightning as the 273 E500 coupe I drove thats nearly AMG fast

This is the thing Steve, there hardy the need for the AMG expense, it is only a fraction of a second slower to 60, the diesel version that your dad bought also goes so well, we had a small burn up on the way home Sunday on the 303 with one :D

The 5.5 seems such a good engine it is a shame it is not available on the current CLS or E class. I would like to pick one up at say 3 years old but they won't exist.

Is there no longer a 500 in those series  the 550 273 came out in mid 2006

The 5.5 is no longer available. A few E class were produced and I have seen one only current model CLS500 on Mercedes Approved Used.

A small batch of 212s found m273 engines but they were very expensive new and the newer diesels give so much power these days that a lot see spending an extra £20k to get an even faster car that uses a lot of fuel relative to the diesels not very attractive.

Shame it's not offered. Choice is great.

Malcolm those are very impressive figures, anywhere clos to that long term and I will be over the moon twice and back.

I have to avoid any hard acceleration or Lilian screams were head off, so yes it is driven very light to get that figure, its much better than my V70R 2.3 around town.

Given that (with this weather) I have to drive like there's an egg between my sole and the hyperspace button, not completely surprised that The Thing shows 24mpg :)

The M113 with supercharger is an awesome engine! Perfectly happy pootling around town, very relaxed and effortless progress, most of the time the 'charger isn't engaged.
Press on a bit and you're into warp speed in a blink of the eye, instant power delivered quite brutally :cool::cool:

I've just experience both faces of this über motor on a trip around the local garden centres - 24 mpg

Am I happy? You ***** bet I am!!

I had the 113 for 6 years, though it is a very good lump the 273 exceeds it all round, at least MB have left the 273 with a much higher output in standard form, and the AMG versions only offer a marginal increase in power, quite unlike the 113 version where there was a large difference from the basic to the AMG version

Those three little letters 'AMG' make all the difference ;)
