Not so much the handling more the grip on take off I am asking about :Oops:

Hoped it would be better than my e280 cdi sport , as theres not such a surge of power getting to the wheels of the e300 d. , non turbo

There's a pedal on the right that can be used to control how much power is fed to the rear wheels. Sorry, couldn't resist

If it's wearing it's origional size tyres/wheels it'll typically be better than something newer as newer generally = wider rubber. If it's a manual (relatively rare compared to autos for MBs) it'll be better than an auto* and if there's some weight in the back it'll be a be a tad better than empty. As said the two things that make the most difference are the tyres and driver

* An auto, especially the more basic 'slushboxes' fitted to these is constantly tyring to move the car when in gear. While some people (that posses no throttle control) have better luck letting them 'creep' to get things moving than they do in a manual if you stop in the wrong place on the wrong tyres an old w124 can sit there ticking over on the spot with the back wheels spinning and they can be interesting to stop as well... if you brake very gently to try an prevent the fronts locking (once below the ABS threshold speed) then (as the rear brakes do far less than the fronts) you can find the car won't stop unless you knock it out of drive as the gearbox is constantly trying to drive the rears

My 124 300TE would only go 6" on summer tyres in Sweden, it needs some weight in the boot

Yes you can run them all year round if you want- no they don't wear out faster any more- no unless you drive "on the limit" you won't notice any difference in handling- yes they are fractionally noisier on the road but not so you will notice after a week- yes the established continental makes are better--yes the best mid range tyres are made by NOKIAN and VREDESTEIN - because they've been at it longer

My mum and dad had a w201 250d from new in 1994 and despite being shod with winter tyres from new was still unpredictable in the snow/ice. Smaller tyres are better but the w124 and w201 had no ESP etc to assist either, theirs was manual and still had problems in the alps where a fwd car would have been fine.

It still felt better than their w203 ever was , and also how my s211 has shown itself to be even with winters.

And I come from a family that have chased the snow round the uk since the 60s and we've been fitting studded tyres (now normal winters) since I was a young child.

Use winter tyres on my e280 but at higher speeds once the temperature rises I could never stick the road noise all year round , always look forward to getting them off .the ones I have are Pirelli and they do improve grip I never have any problems with the handling of the car it's where I live taking off or reversing up the hill is my problem. But hoping not to buy winters for the old e300 going to put a few bags of sand in back to see how it does.

Worse than a FWD car, marginally better than a normal W124 due to higher weight over rear axle and the SLS suspension does seem to help a little bit.

Should be better at starting off than the newer one due to no TC and narrower tyres.

Agree with the point above, it needs to go into "N" to stop sometimes, not that this is a problem if you are aware of it.
