Oil "hi" warning

Sometimes i get a picture of an oil can followed by the word "HI" on my A class display panel. Its accompanied by a bleep & stays on for a few minutes.
Presumably, this is a warning that the oil level has been topped up to too high a level?

It happened twice over the last two weeks/400 miles.

Any idea why this happens?

I changed the oil & filter in the week & it happened once with the old oil in & once with the new oil.

. . . and yes, obviously the oil level has been checked & rechecked, hot & cold & always on the level & is spot on the top mark - definately not overfilled, or "HI" . . . !

Never fill to top mark, once the oil is hot it emulfifies and the level increases, hence, over filled, keep it a few mm below top level.....

Well i never.
In around 40 years in the motor industry including my present job of 10 years as a Service Advisor at a main dealer, ive never heard that before!

If that's the case, why didnt MB just manufacture the dipstick with the top mark a couple of mm lower down to avoid people putting the correct amount of oil in?
Why does it not tell you in the manual that the oil level must never be filled as far as the top mark?
Should they not decrease the "oil capacity" in the specs table?

Must be unique to the A class?

Nope, this goes for most of the MB models, don't no why, they just do!!!

How strange.

Mine did it the first time after about two hours of constant driving over about 100 miles. The next time, it was after about 5 miles.

Weird.
I think i'll just ignore it if it happens again . . .

Or you could have a level sensor playing up, the A class do like a level sensor or two.............

It happens very rarely. . . theres no pattern. I can drive it a dozen times & nothing, but twice its happened.

Maybe it is a sensor.
I'll just keep an eye on the level for now. . .

Drain off 200ml. Then run the car and check in the morning when stone cold. If all is ok then take for a good thrashing. If the warning throws back up then you need a sender

Mine does it when the oil is nice and hot usually only after 10/20 miles. I've asked my garage not to fill it up to the full mark but it still happens so I suck a half litre out through the dipstick tube with an electric pump.

If you don't have a dipstick tube on your model it's a bit more difficult.

My 202 did it for 12 years ! regardless of if it was max or min on the dipstick.
Sensor was changed several times and it never got better.

I had the same problem when I first got the car, Cole at MBS drained off the oil to the correct level and no more problem

As i said, the oil is at the correct level as per dipstick.

It sounds that this is a "problem" that has been going on on these models for years & MB should've sorted it out if thats the case. . . the handbook doesn't say "fill the oil to a couple of mm below the correct mark on the dipstick..." !

As i said earlier in this thread, if thats the case, why didn't MB a) Use a dipstick with a recalibrated top mark, or b)Mention it in the handbook that you should never fill to the "correct" mark on the dipstick.

Quite agree, but thats MB for you, never had this problem with my Volvos, when the oil level indicated a top up which was very rarely, just filled to the max mark and that was it.
It does sound daft only to fill between Min and Max.
