C107 diff change - help please!

Just an update and a bit of advice wanted on my C107 diesel project, we have now got the diff from the donor car which was a 124 OM603 and we intend to swap the diff internals into the 107 housing, it looks quite feasable as the drive shaft ends are circlipped and i have it on good authority that this is the case, however any tips or a second opinion would be welcome!

Also what does everyone think would be the easiest way to seperate the driveshafts from the diff as regards where to split the suspension?

Any hints, tips or observations would be very welcome!

getting the drive shafts out of the c107 diff will require the services of The Hulk.

I was trying to do it to put a new brake backing plate on. My mechie nearly burst a blood vessel trying to pull the shaft out. We gave up after about an hour of concentrated , properly-tooled effort, with a huge puller/slide hammer kind of thing. We ended up cutting the backing plate in half, and welding it back together in place on the shaft end.

Some serious hydraulic assistance may well be required in your chosen task.

On the other hand, it might just have been mine that was a bit stiff, if you pardon the pun.

Thanks for that, so if I leave the suspension alone, is there room to drop the diff and try to remove the shafts? Or will the suspension need to be split as well? My aim is to end up with the diff on the bench then I hope the complete assembly can be swapped from the 124 one, fingers crossed!

You have to dismantle all the rear hubs to get the drive shafts out

Thanks so i guess its spring compressors and violence time! I was kinda hoping dropping the diff assembly might have given enough space to get the shafts out of it leaving the hubs untouched!

Thanks for that, i might have bad news! I think they are circlipped into the diff! How did you get the other end free? Did you have to split the suspension?

as i recall, and it was about 4 years ago now

we didn't get far at all.

I wasn't much help on that occasion, just standing around wincing every time another blow with the slide came home.

it looked painful enough up on a four post lift. how are you approaching it?

Afraid it will be in the garage on axle stands, I have just pulled the shafts out the donor car diff and they pulled straight out (they are clipped into the diff - you need the backplate off!)

Still not sure of how to go on suspension wise, i will give it a serious look at the weekend, 2 of us are going to have a crack next week one night - keep you posted!

Well I think we are going at this job Tuesday night, anyone any hints at getting these pesky driveshafts out, I think I have a handle on how we are going about the diff bit but any thoughts on the easiest way to strip the beast?

Its really the easiest way to drop the diff assembly without disturbing too much, so i suppose a drive shaft change would be the nearest, thanks for that.

So you would like the info to drop the diff from a 107, a hard call as not much info but it will be the same as some others

Well folks the diff is dropped, no need to split suspension and driveshafts pulled straight out (once circlips were removed!) It all now lying on the garage floor but the 124 is stripped, looks as though all can be swapped easy anough - just waiting of oil seals from MB and it can be built up.

Have the prop away for balance to, the fella who did the engine change had it streched by 2" but it aint balanced and it has already wrecked the front donut so getting that chacked out to.

As usual I will keep you posted, I think there just might be a great car waiting to emmerge from the carnage!
