I've noticed that my recently acquired W124 is making a clicking/ticking noise when reversing.

The car drives perfectly other than this and it doesn't happen in forward gears. Gear changes are smooth up and down the 'box.

This only seems to happen after a cold start. After the car has warmed up the noise quietens significantly, to the point where it can no longer be heard.

Any ideas?

The car has 120k on it, and is in great condition overall. I've done 1000 miles in the past week, and it's never missed a beat. Great long distance car!

I should have said that it's a 5 speed auto in my original post.

It seems to be coming from the transmission tunnel, so I assumed it was gearbox related.

Your car is a late one, and I am very sure that there is no cable and its electronic

most 124s do that.

my Aug 1995 has a speedo cable.

It's the ASR equipped cars with drive-by-wire that do not have cables.
