Actually - after an initial 'Hmmmmm....not sure about that' moment it's actually growing on me  Certainly be interesting to have a test drive in one and see how it compares to my W211. If I had the money (which of course I don't ) then I might even be tempted to chop mine in for a new equivalent - as it is though I'm still happy enough with mine, so the lack of car funds doesn't bug me too much I guess ;)

Cheers,
Mark

How very sad to see the three pointed star/gunsight is being removed from the bonnet on the Sport version. Sacrilege on an E class IMO.

This, and the sport grille version doesn't have that presence which I have always liked on the 'e'

Only had my 1st e for 12 months tomorrow but the gunsight is merc to me over the last 20 years that my folks have had the too :(

I would be tempted to fit one

Doesn't look like I'll be going for the sport version, I love the three pointed bonnet star! Bit gutted to be honest. I'll stick with my W211 for a good while yet!

I am sure that it is better in real life but for me, it doesn't have that wow factor, but who knows, it may grow on me.

Don't like the sports one but the standard grill one looks better than the 212 IMHO. Like a small S.
Still, irrelevant as the 211 will have to last until the kids finish uni.

Hmmmm... I don't think I will buy it. However, would like to see an AMG version, see what that is like. Like some people, fairly disapointed. I think Merc here have been a bit lazy with the styling, back and side look not that much different.

So, if I want to buy the Sport version I lose the bonnet badge. This is a problem.

How could I get around the problem? Any way of having a bonnet badge retrofitted?

Buy a new badge off Mercedes for around £25.

I'm sure if you're stumping up over 30 big ones any decent dealer would fit it free - especially if its a deal breaker.

It often cannot be done as no room under the bonnet for it, plus the mounting is welded into the bonnet before the car was painted

Well I like the look of the pics released so far. The beige interior looks like a proper Mercedes at last. A bit like my current CLS!!!!)

At this rate it will be bringing me back into the MB fold, as I was sure our next car would have to be bought from another marque. In fact we almost bought a Volvo recently, as one of my previous posts explained......

It will be interesting to see if they have changed the exterior colours.

Bonnet vs grill badge

Are they really not going to offer the tradition grill and star bonnet? I did read an Auto Express review which said it would be a no cost option, but no mention in the online brochure.

Poor judgement by Mercedes if no option and it would put me off going for one when the current car is a little older.

I've always undersood the badge to be the preserve of MB sports cars. Doubtless the marketing men feel it would appeal more to buyers of 'sport' versions of saloons, and presumably estates! Surely this E class has merely had an S class front end grafted.

WhatCar says: -

“The encouraging news is that Mercedes has done some work on the standard suspension settings. The outgoing car had three set-ups; the super-soft settings on SE cars were too slushy, the super-stiff Sport models were too firm, but the in-between settings of the Avantgarde model provided a good balance of comfort and control.“

I agree with their comment –but how sad then that MB are dropping the Avantgarde model!

Equally sad as WhatCar report
“The not-so-good news is that AMG Sport models get an even stiffer version of the previous 'Sport' suspension, which we suspect could make the ride even more punishing.”

Odd as it may seem those who buy the cheapest model will get the best suspension as the
entry-level SE cars now come with an ever-so slightly softer version of the Avantgarde suspension.

One more sad quote from WhatCar: -

“On most versions, prices have risen by thousands rather than hundreds compared with the outgoing car, and that also means the E-Class costs significantly more than the equivalent Audi A6 or BMW 5 Series.”

I contacted MB UK Customer Services and they confirmed that the standard grill with bonnet mounted badge will NOT be available in the UK. That's very sad as it looks great on the German Mercedes website!

That's one lost sale then unless I can get a RHD model from Germany!

Walking round my local showroom I am not sure if I will ever adapt to some of the newer shapes :( The only consultation is that if I keep my CL for another 5 years and then get a CL bluetec, that will last me till I am 85, maybe I will not care after that,,just got to wait and see.
