Hi

A couple of weeks back I purchased some oil and other service parts from ECP.

Now I usually put in 0W/30 or 5W/30 in my 93 E220 Coupe. She's on 136k.

They didn't have any in either grade,so the young chap looked in one of their oil books. It listed 10W/40 for my car!

I thought it odd,but it needed changing so I put it in.
Is it safe to leave in for 6k?? I change my oil every 6k plus Mahle filter.
It's just.....bothering me,especially as I walked past oil clearly marked BMW/Mercedes in Hellfrauds yesterday and it was 5W/30

TIA

Steve

If its for your W124 then I would say the 0/30 or 5/30 you have been putting in is wrong as its too thin! A 10w40 is far more suitable to the 104 engine.

Agreed, for UK temperatures.

15/40 is ok

15/50 is ok

10/50 is ok

FWIW the more important bits are the ACEA/API specs and manufacturer approvals, MB229.1 in this case. 10/40 etc is just the viscosity.
Having said that it's probably quite difficult to buy oil that doesn't meet or exceed mb229.1 these days (?) as it's quite basic stuff

I have always put 10/40 in my 124 with no problems, so as Naraic said:

Worry not:D

My Lawnmower has fully synthetic.
Its all I had, then I found Honda had put a bottle in the box it came in couldn't be bothered changing it.

I suspect MB229.1 merely states something like "no foreign particles larger than a grain of sand", or something like that.

Hahaaaaaaaa! Excellent :D

So she's previously had too thin a protective film between friction surfaces huh?

Good to know she's now on the correct oil.

Yes,well done youth. I think I'm going to write to him :p;)

Stop this dissery! Its very wrong!:D

Anyway, being a fellow 93 W124'er,your previous post had me wondering if you too had spent much time/effort on protecting yours from rotting underneath (and everywhere else :p)

I've been going pretty thorough under mine with POR 15 etc
There is about 3 products currently on the underside, but the main thing is,I'm on top of the rot.

Now to dry out my boot!
