The fan for the climate control has stopped working and doesn't kick in when I press the quick clear button either. Is th is going to mean an expensive trip to Mercedes?

Heater resistor? I am not sure where it is on a B Class, hopefully some one can help you soon.

There are 3 parts to the system

The control unit, these hardly ever give problems, they have an output of between 0 and 7 volt, 7 volt being the highest.

The fan motor, these have carbon brushes, doubtful if they are worn out on a 06 car, but motors can fail.

The series resistor is the most common fault, particularly if water has got into the heater box with all the rain of late.

these have just the live wire to the fuse
A wire from the control unit
A ground connection
The live to the motor ground lead.

40.45 series resistors
30 the motor

I may be able to find some instructions for getting to the motor

OK,, It could be fiddly as the part is in the end of the heater box and the fan not dropping down like most cars. The part is probably near the £100 mark.
