My W212 has self levelling headlights. This appears to get calibrated every time the engine is started. My question is: If the calibration is carried out when started on a downward slope how might the alignment be affected when the car is on the level or on an upwards slope?

Assuming that MB HIDs are similar in operation to those fitted to my Vauxhall, they use level sensors on the front & rear suspension & are always checking for level, so it won't matter whether you car is pointing up hill, down hill or level when it's started. :)

But they do a dance up/down and sideways when the car is started.

All Xenon lamps have a motorized leveling system. when the car is turned off the lamps point to the ground, turn them on and they lift up, possibly over shoot a touch and settle according to the information coming from the level sensors on the front and rear axles

Yes, I know, they do that on my old bus too. You're over thinking it.
