There is a warning if the car is started then moved with the foot parking brake on. I'm curious as to why MB did not design the system such that it would prevent driving through the parking brake?

Most Mercedes parking brakes are near useless, I could drive my SL500 with it on not knowing other than the light in the dash.

On the newer cars with the electric parking brake, as soon as the car moves it turn the parking brake off

On many newer cars as said, the Parking Brake will be cancelled as you drive off...but it wasn't always so on any car...so I'm not sure why you ask...your car just isn't new enough...

But I think if you had the selector on the steering column it would cancel the PB.

Sorry I did not realise that an electric parking brake had been added. So this presumably is the W212 that has the straight shaped running lights and coloured info display?

One cannot have a switch that stop the engine from being started if the parking brake is on or set, for many use the parking brake in traffic, not something that I would ever do, P is easier and better

My wife is constantly saying (but only when finally parked) "you have not applied the parking brake"

I should say to her "are you deaf not to hear the ratchet"

I have refrained from doing so as she might answer " Is that just a little louder than a mouse's"

You mentioned that my car might be "older" but it is year 2011. The only upgrade that I have heard about is the one that involved the running light and info display changes and therefore none of these changes involved the wipers.

I'm happy now since receiving the further replies.

I used to drive a 1977 Chevy Caprice that had a foot operated park brake and as soon as the car was put in gear it released itself - Great

Even my 68 Caddy has it

I now have a 2003 Dodge Ram with a foot operated park brake and no gear release !

Is the world going backwards ?

All automatic cars should have auto releasing park brakes in my opinion ! They could do it in the 1950's so why stop in the 2000's

Designers get old and forget to incorporate these things

Think some of the newest "Benz " have electronic parking brakes- The new A class has. The old foot operated parking brake very seldom went wrong--- if VW Passat owners are anything to go by its one of their most common breakdown faults. The exhortation "drive to your nearest Mercedes service station" will have a certain irony if the handbrake won't release.

Indeed my local garage has many cars with electric parking brakes with problems, many not cheap to fix either, I must just wait and see with mine ;)

Electronic hand brake would have been much more safer and modern. Audi & BMW introduced this technology years ago. I don't know why a car like the CLS both W219/218 should have a foot brake?

The 218 must have an electric brake surely.. my CL does, but that will not hold my car in my driveway

Only the S/CL have the elecronic release. 212/204 based cars have a manual one. Just like before.

Its not too difficult. Push the lever in to activate it. Pull the little handle to release it.

My fathers S class has an awful electronic one and I miss the 3rd pedal whenever I drive this car.

How can you miss a brake pedal and the release handle, you cannot drive off with it on and it does not wake up the whole road when its released.

I reckon with the extra room it gives me and if I had lane assist I could enjoy sex while driving in my CL

I am an old man before my time, I like everything just so. I am so used to driving Mercedes cars that lesser features like hand brakes go over my head.

I find the old system nicer than the new electronic one.

The 123 was a very rugged estate car Steve,, and the 300 diesel only took 23 seconds to get to 60
