I've recently bought a 2008 W204, 220cdi. Driving the car to work, which is about a 9 mile journey consisting of driving through 2 villages (1 with many speed humps), some twisty B road and about 1 1/2 mile of A57 at the end. When I arrive at work my the trip computer on the dash is showing between 40 - 43 mpg (which i'm quite happy with). However I drove from junction 30 on the M1 up to Driffield (about 70 ish miles each way) via motorway and A road's, the best my car achieved all day was 41.2 mpg. I drove the majority of the trip with the cruise contol & the car in its Comfort setting.

My dad owns a W203 270 cdi on a 54 reg, and it would seem is out doing my newer car on economy.
It's probably worth a mention that while I may only be 20, i'm driving the car sensibly (mostly due the fact i'm quite afraid of crashing it) and not driving it as though I were in a rally stage.

Is this something to be expected for my car, or is there something I need to be looking at?

Any opinions/personal experience would be appreciated :)

W212/-09/350CDI, W219/-07/320CDI, EX:W220/-01/320CDI, EX:W211/-04/320CDI, EX:W210/-01/270CDI
Theoretical consumptions:
W203 270CDI 7.1L/100km
W204 220CDI 6.7L/100km

Are both cars with automatic transmission? Manual consumes slightly less...
Did you measured both mpgs, or trusted what computer says? It may be wrong up to 10%. Other things which has strong effect: size of tyres (wide, big wheels takes more) or brand of tyre (overall rolling friction). Then, what's temperature of your engine? Failed stat causes lower mpg.

both are auto, however the w203 has 16" wheels and my 204 has 17's. What puzzles me most is the difference in my car when on a motorway journey compared to when im going to work

I changed from a 2001 C270 S203 to a 2008 C220 S204 in March - and I'm convinced the S203 gave better MPG! I would routinely see 45-50mpg on the S203, but I can't seem to better 45mpg on the S204.

I would say 40 mpg for a C220 Cdi is about average. That's what we got.

On a Motorway journey like that assuming decent speeds he should get closer to 50 though... my 2002 C220 CDI would eaisly get above 55mpg on a 120 mile run and at about 70 it would be around 50....

I agree, on a recent trip I started on the M25 at a steady 50mph and the dash was showing over 55mpg. Further north the speed has increased to 80-90mph but the average for the whole journey was still around 42mpg.

Anyone who cannot get 50mpg from a 220CDi is driving it like a petrol engined car, wrong approach, you will always be wasting fuel.

What year of car was this with, please? I ask because the newer BE cars are more economical than the OP's (and my) early car.

You think so? My best is 68.3mpg & I've saw posts from older manual owners with up to 77mpg.

It was actually Cataloyking's cars that I was trying to sus out! As he seems to have had 2 204s, I would assume the one that returns high 50s is a newer BE car and the other similar to yours and mine.

Either way, your shorter journey MPG is fairly close to mine but on the m/w I can see anywhere between 48 and 54 depending on how big a hurry I'm in and on traffic. On my most recent journey South (430miles) I saw 50.4 on the OBC at an average of 68MPH with staggered 17in wheels. I find the OBC reads about 2MPG high normally.

If you're not sure of the car's history, it might be worth checking the air filter and also confirm that the thermostat is allowing the engine to come up to a decent running temperature. I should also say that I saw an improvement after the garage applied an engine management update at my 40K service.

I'd confirm the twisty road figures at about 40 - 42mpg. My C220CDi shows that after the 9 mile run to the motorway every day on A & B roads. Once on the motorway I have a 20 mile run to get to work. At the end of each journey I have 50 - 54 mpg showing. On the way home, from cold, the motorway section gradually increases from about 30mpg to about 55mpg and then reduces on the twisty bits to show 50 - 54 mpg on a hot engine and gearbox. Sometimes if the weather is reallly bad and I have to drive slowly on the motorway, I can get to the motorway turnoff with almost 60mpg showing

I find that once everything warms up it will settle down and the longer the run, the better the mpg gets. We often go from Edinburgh to Yeovil and for the 450 mile run (400 on motorways, the average is about 56 mpg averaging about 60mph overall and mostly on cruise at 75 mph. This usually checks out within a couple of percent on doing a manual calculation.
