Another E280 mpg query!

Picked up my 56 plate E280 sport estate yesterday and have since done circa 200 motorway miles, keeping to speed between 70-75mph and my consumption is showing as 33.9mpg. This cant be right....can it?

I used to get 46 and once even 50 mpg out of my W210 320!

Any ideas??

Sounds ok. Estates do less mpg than saloons and winter diesel yields less efficiency.

In short I wouldn't be worried.

Only worried in the fact I bought this based on figures I'd seen in mid 40's! I do 40k a year so it might have to go if this is the case!

I have a 51 plate C270 estate and know it is a different motor to yours but in the winter I put a drop of two stroke oil in with the diesel. I think it improves the mpg and on runs I am getting just over 50 mpg at this time of year. I read about this tip on this site and am sure the motor runs better.

You'll have to nurse it. My saloon averaged 37mpg with the V6 diesel and on a gentle run would attain 45mpg on motorway. An estate has no chance of matching those.

can get a touch over 40mpg on a half decent run in our 280...not done a decent run in the 430 yet:lol:

Just a bit confused as to why my older straight 6 320 should be better than my newer, more efficient (supposedly), smaller engined 280!

This was all gentle driving on the motorway aswell! I could live with just over 40, but 33??

I just purchased a 56 plate E Class Saloon 320 CDI and have been similarly disappointed.

My old 270 CDI Mercedes CLK 2003 did 46-52mpg on my usual run.

The 320 E Class does about 36mpg on usual 66 mile run, about 38-39 on motorways and 31 ish through town etc... Was expecting about 5mpg more.

Still, it's a nice car so ill put up with it for a couple of years. Very quick!

Ther older I6 cars are heaps more economical. Yours is at least smoother, marginally.

If I were buying an E320cdi again, the 3200cc I6 is what I'd buy.

210's always seemed more economical than 211's. Same with 220cdi variants as well.

I posted what I posted with comments from Gizze and other 211 estate V6 320cdi (V6CDi) owners that sited much lower MPG than me (when I had my E320 saloon) whilst being driven in a similar manner (NSL on a motorway)

I could get over 50mpg from the saloon 320cdi but not often.

Damn it! I turned down a fully loaded 05 with the IL6 engine thinking I'd be better off with the V6!

There must be something wrong somewhere, at those gentle speeds you should see 40mpg. Worth checking basics like tyre pressures (32psi all round) and that the air filter has been changed. I don't remember anyone posting 33mpg over 200 miles, that's the sort of mpg I'd expect doing a local 20 mile mixed commute. Try talking to the retailer and tell him it's not right.

The w211 estate in 280 and 320 guise is geared for around 55mph. I could see high 40's sat at that sort of speed.

60mph would see 42mpg.
70mph would see around 38mpg.
80mph would see 35mpg.
90mph would see it drop to around 31mpg.

Official figures.

Extra Urban is, car up to temp, ambient air temp of 21ºc, summer fuel, all toys off, drive for 7 miles reaching 70mph once and averaging only 39mph.

My car was listed as 26 urban and 44 extra urban, and 34 combined.

Did a test to see if I could hit the extra urban figure one morning, heading home, just over 30 miles, managed to up the average speed from 39 to 50mph and still beat it.

That is why a test drive is so important, are the figures good for your driving?

I too have beat the Mercedes figures for my SL and CL, but do you really want to drive thinking about it, sure lovely to know that with sensible driving a good figure is possible.

Gizze, I've seen over 52mpg from a V6CDi saloon driving like that, on the sport set up with 265 tyres at back at 245s at front.

The fact a skinnier and more bedded in estate gets worse shows how detrimental estate body work is to mpg. 33mpg is what estates average with V6 diesel engines and low 40s on a run is fine

Well Im gutted, just come back from a very easy going jaunt across the moors and averaged 28.4. I used to get 31 from a 911 turbo and didn't even give a care for the mpg.

I need to do a tank to tank test and will post as soon as I know but I did put £100 in so make take a few days...well maybe not at this rate!

I could understand it if I maybe got low 40's compared to the W210 (although I still wouldn't expect it) but 12-15 mpg difference I find a bit hard to swallow!
