Evening all
Just got home from the Xmas present run, when I got home I could smell petrol. Now after a quick look underneath I have found petrol on the tank front, passenger side.

So my question is what could it be, is there a breather pipe above there or a return pipe etc. Car seems to be running fine.

Many thanks and happy Christmas

Rob.....

The fuel lines are here, you do have the return to tank pipes as well.

Many thanks, so looking at the diagrams pipes 107/113 could be leaking. And they look like breather pipes. I had the brake lines done in oct so I am guessing when they dropped the tank the pipes have worked loose over time. Just hope there is easy access.

Cheers bob.

If it leaks more when the tank is full, then I'd go for the drain plug seals (item 20 in Malc's 1st pic)

Done a couple of these... cost of seals is pence.

Thanks rpe2, looking at it the leak it is defiantly coming from the top of the tank. Funny you should mention the tank being full. It has been the first time for ages that I filled the tank to the brim last week. It is now on half ish.

Cheers bob..

Looking around some old posts with the same symptoms, there have been reports of pipes perishing - worth getting onto a ramp to check over..

As above it is almost certainly a perished pipe rather than the tank itself. I have had to replace several pipes on both of my car's.
As yours is leaking it should be fairly obvious which one needs to be replaced, but carefully inspect all the hoses and the slightest sign of cracking or perishing replace it, as it might not be leaking but it soon will be.

Well had a good look today and it looks like a fuel line has rusted through :( It looks like it is above the rear diff and fuel has been running down a few pipes onto the top of the tank. Anyone had these pipes replaced and a approx cost at a independent?

Cheers bob..

Thanks for replying, was that main dealer or indi ?

Unfortunately it was a main dealer Arnold Clark of Grangemouth. Local indi didn't fancy the job as the rear axle has to be dropped. The cost did include a courtesy car for three days though..

Hi again, looking under the car there looks like there is only one metal petrol pipe running from the rear to the front of the car. I am guessing there is no return as the pressure is regulated at source. So if this is the case if I was to run a pipe from the pump at the rear to where the pipe runs under the car, copper plastic or rubber fuel rated of course. Does anyone see a problem.
When I built my kit car the rules were fairly simple but not sure for a production car, ie modification.
Still going to garage just to see what cost is involved but they dont open on the 2nd.
Cheers rob.

I did post up that I did a search on plastic fuel pipes, and there are loads of firms that fit them,, this means for subframe dropped.

Every car has a return to thank system so 2 pipes

Do you know where the fuel return pipe would be, couldn't see one. I was guessing there was no return as a few modern fuel injected bikes have no return. And with a quick look where the fuel pump, filter etc there looked like a fuel pressure regulator. But that was just a brief pull flap down look.
Do you have a diagram of fuel pipe runs etc under the car?

Cheers

It would appear that the return goes back to the filter and not the tank,, I hav given the part list for you to work out.
