This afternoon discovered the boot is quiet wet in the right hand corner nearest the rear light. Haven't had a chance to investigate yet but will tomorrow.
Any pointers on where to look for source of leak please?

No damp smells so think it's not been a long term thing - I hope!

On many Mercedes the actual stampings are poor, this leaves a burr around the stamping, I would unscrew the nuts and remove and use a sealer then replace the lamp

I would just remove the lamp, make sure the rubber seal is correctly seated and refit and see if it remedies the problem.

If there is a burr around the stamping, it will never seal, and the reason why its leaking, hence the sealer added,,,, If you try and remove the burr, then the rust could set in. :D

An opinion Malcolm, without seeing the car neither one of us can give a definitive answer. 'If' being the operative word. What if it isnt what you said...... I'd go with the simplest solution and see if it is seated properly first.

Thank you again for your very constructive reply, these faults are listed in WIS along with the remedy, thats what I post up here :D

Surely a drop of Jenolite would prevent this??

I would avoid cutting or grinding any metal, rust sets in very easily on these cars.
Sealing with Silicone etc is reversible if applied sensibly.

Yes indeed and correct, NW merc is allowed to post trying to put me down

By putting a thin bead all round the aperture, when you fit the lamp it will bed down and give a complete seal.

It is just no good tightening up the nuts as is, for there is a risk of cracking the very expensive lamp.

Thanks for replies. Been feeling too ill to go look today (sniff).

Are you saying it may well be the rear lamp assembly not seating properly?

Yes the lamps are normally held on with 4 nuts about 6 to 8mm

Stange, I had a look today and it's all bone dry. removed the access panel and had a good look round with a torch and no signs of water ingress in there at all.
Will keep looking over the next few days/weeks and see if it happens again.
