Hi evereyone, my car C320CDI (W204) has the option on its datacard 249 INSIDE AND OUTSIDE MIRROR AUTOMATIC DIMMING.

To me it looks like the nearside mirror glass has been replaced as it is not the same as the offside, it also does not defrost.

Can the glass be changed on its own or do you need to replace the full assembly?.

If possible I would like to get it back to the auto dimming type.

Thanks.

If the offside mirror is an auto dimming glass it will not be the same as the passenger side as these are just heated, if you fold the mirrors a lot then it could be a broken wire within the mirror.

The mirrors heat up automatically at temps below 15c

As high as that? They must always be heating up then in the UK

That what it says in WIS, the earlier systems operated at a much lower temp

I believed you Malc :), just seems to be quite a high-ish temp threshold ...... maybe it'd be easier/cheaper to tie them in with when the heated rear screen was turned on. ;) ;)

Thanks for your replies.

The mirrors are never folded, they make that awful noise when you do and sound as thought they are going to break so I never fold them.

Is it easy enough to take off the glass and check the power supply to it with a multimeter.

I can send you the work sheets for removing the glass and the cover, you can then put a voltmeter over the two wires :D

I think its normal to have just the Drivers and Interior mirror auto dim, passenger door is normal to just be heated.

Even if you do take it off (which is easy) I am sure you will just see a single pair of wires for the heating. If they are autodimming, then yes there will be another pair of wires but they are only powered when in dimming mode.

The heating side of it, has I think a small temp sensitive switch on the back of the mirror. To test you could a, check the supply voltage if any and b, use an aresol turned upside down to spray the gas onto the switch

Mine are auto dimming, heated, dip when reversing, and fold themselves in when the car is locked. And I can remember when mirrors were just mirrors. Unbelievable.

While you are playing with the mirrors, do get some silicon or PTFE and spray in the fulcrum point where they swivel on and they will go quiet, you may have to help them to start with but they will go silky smooth.
