Afternoon all

After a few years away from MB I'm back, and a fair bit of water has flowed under the bridge since then!
I sold my E55
AMGAutotrader4.jpg

and bought a XK Love the noise that made and boy it was a looker! ( I did have a C200 as a run around whilst I had this so was still in a MB I guess)
P8310777.jpg

then after setting up my own business I traded that for a XFs needed the fuel economy :( Nice cat but a bit flimsy ;)
P2200867-1.jpg

which I sold back to Jaguar as at the time I needed the money out of cars for the business. I managed to pick up a bargain Audi A8 sport D. upon which I hammered a stack of miles in just under two years sold with 96K on the clock and still driving well without a rattle. Cracking car totally over engineered in every way and fitted with just about every extra you could imagine.

This week I bought an E350 CDI Sport Coupe! My mileage has dropped now and my eldest is now driving his own chariot so I fancied something smaller sportier. Despite the oil burner under the bonnet it goes well and reminds me of my E55 which is still the best car I have ever owned.
I picked this one up from MB retail with 20K on the clock and in very good nick with a nice spec as I love my toys. It has Command, Full Seat Memory pack , Upgraded leather, Rear Blind and Harmon Kardon in addition to the normal sport kit. And I must say it's nice to be back in a Mercedes as I just fit they fit me well ;) During this period I have also managed to acquire a 96 XJ 4 litre Sport Jaguar from my Dad who has given up driving. I swapped the Westfield for a classic Triumph Stag which I am slowly restoring I do like the sound of a V8 in the family!! And I am also part way thropugh the restoration of a Classic Mini which also occupies the garage at the moment and should be finished this summer! All in all its been a busy few years. Glad to see some folks are still on here from when I was here before :) Always was a great forum.
Cheers Glyn

Do you still have that A8, I have a soft spot for them.

That Jag XK convertible, IMHO the finest GT car on sale presently. It just is, because I say it is...LOL

My younger brother now drives my A8 D3 4.2 and I get to see her from time to time. Yes, I do love the XKs. They have the same engine setup as the A8 but unfortunately only manage to put out only 300 BHP for the 4.2 version. My A8 D3 has the 4.2 engine and puts out 335 hp and 266 lbs/ft (not great Torque anyway) but the car felt really really fast. When it comes to interior design, the previous generation A8 D3 was unbeatable in its range. Luscious wood everywhere, beautifully desgined cluster/speedometer, gigantic boot etc. List is endless!

Now if we talk about the XKR.S now this car is in a different league as opposed to a base XK 4.2 version.

Me, I could woofle around in an XK up our Scottish roads, 4200cc will make a plenty fast car and its under 7 sec to 60 in the low 6 secs and good for 150mph plus so rapid enough without being savagely hard to control.

I'd have the A8 for the motorways, nothing wrong with a C220 but off to Yorkshire tomorrow and its a good motorway haul which an A8 would make even more effortless.

That's the start of the demise Steve - downhill all the way now - sold by Spring ;).

+1

Absolute motorway muncher. I miss that effortless cruising of the A8 but the CLS substitutes indirectly for it and gives me a different driving experience. Please Steve, don't push me into asking my car back from my brother LOL.

I think its demise will be when CLS shooting brakes start becoming sensible money....

That car is soooooo gorgeous. I prefer the lines of the shooting brake to the current W218 saloon. Anyway, let's see what Audi & Co will come up with. Hmmm

CLS shooting brake is the car for me. No debate, no doubt. I will have one.

Definitely, I see that you like estate cars. But you must opt for the 350 CDI or 63 Bi-turbo engine just for the fun aspect of it. Now, that is what I call a real man's car.

A V6diesel. No chance. my last one was so awful I couldn't face another. Great performance and economy, but mental unreliability.

A 250cdi and a 250CGi CLS SB would be my choice, or the AMG. Thing is I drive on fairly small roads and the C class is super along them, a CLS SB is a fair bit larger and the AMG would be superb, but the car is overpowered for my needs

Now that is an interesting point. Could this mean that the 250 CDI engines in recent Mercs are more reliable than the previous 320 CDIs? My wife drives the Audi Q5 3.0 TDI and that car pulls and pulls because of the turbo effect. Honestly, I would have thought that the 320 CDIs in the Mercs would perform better.

I have had 2 220cdi engined cars and mechanically both have been ok. My 320cdi car gave 2x engine component failures with repair costs over 45k miles of nearly £3000.

The VAG V6 only has one major weakness, the swirl flap mechanism can wear giving faults. The motor does a test on start up to measure the resistance between the flap and motor. If this goes above a certain value the EML goes on. It can be ignored and driven on no issue at all, but its an expensive fix around £1000. I have toyed with an Audi A4 new shape replacement but I'd want a DSG quattro (and need 3.0TDi as the 2.0TDi units are unreliable) and it was well out of my price range and the C class estate is so good no point spending more to get no better car.

The 250cdi engines are a highly revised version of my engine with timing gear at the back of the engine, with a lot of the timing gear driven and with two turbos. We've not read too many issues bar injectors with those. Plus 200bhp is enough for a car used on narrow country lanes.
