Rattle from rearseat latch - W124 Wagon

My 1994 E220 Wagon has an annoying rattle that comes from the latch the holds up the folding rear seat back. When the seat is down the rattle is gone.

Also, if I reset the seat, the rattle disappears for about a minute and then restarts.

I'm pretty sure that the rubber latch is loose and rattles and squeaks when going over bumps.

I've tried various strips of foam with varying degrees of success but I just can seem to silence that damn rattle.

Any ideas?

I used the self amalgamating tape round the face on the catch, just a few turns and the rattle was gone on my V70R but it might no be possible on the 124

As Televison says, try a few layers of tape on the locking loop on the outer edges of the rear seats. This sits in the catch and can rattle like crazy

It might be suggesting that the rear spheres need replacing...

What exactly is the 'locking loop', could you describe it more specifically.

I'm been trying to pinpoint the exact location of the rattle but it's difficult to do so since the seat is of course down when the rattle occurs. But I guess that it's the rubber hook that catches the metal bar that's attached to the seat. Perhaps it doesn't sit tightly.

Also, why would the rear spheres be connected to this issue?

In your first post you say it rattles when the seat is up, and in the second when the seat is down.

Sorry for the confusion.

When the seat is in the normal upright position it rattles, when it's folded down there's no rattle.

Moreover, after the seat has been latched in the upright position it won't rattle for about 5 minutes, then the rattle while develop.

I'll try the Self Amalgamating tape tomorrow.

Otherwise the car is a dream to drive and the rattle is driving me nuts.

218 is the lock for the seat,,, some plastic sleeving over one or both of the catches that lock the seat in or on the peg on the seat that goes into the lock 218

Getting rid of that rattle has changed our driving world and now I can cruise in peace.
