Not sure if this has been done before but for a bit of fun and possibly debate.

I have owned around 50 cars in the 26 years since passing my test. Contenders for the worst of them were.

A Ford Scorpio (gearbox broke, no perforrnance and rubbish economy), BMW 535 - which was originally owned by Fred the Shred Goodwin. Had £1000s of BMW service receipts but at 90k miles still needed a new camshaft and brake discs every 5000 miles...

But I think the one that tops my list was a 1986 MG Maestro 2.0 EFi - ate wheelbearings, rusted, looked like a teapot. On the plus side it did go quite well and handled better than you may think.

What stands out for anyone else?

Austin Montego Countryman estate.... Rattling bag of mess... Huge inside , felt like you were driving a big armchair though but omg could it roll on a bend! ...someone stole the wheels off it when I parked up to go hill walking one day ... Was forever finding the solenoid a going n the door locks and the sun roof leaked and dropped water down your neck when you braked ... Complete piece of British made ****e!

Oh and I did buy an N reg Renault Clio for 1700 that cost me 1800 to put right including about 300 for a clutch due to the way the French built the clutch in you had to remove everything to replace it .. French crap..

Citroen AX,was the worst, bought while I was doing work on my mk2 cavalier sri,and I hated every minute of ownership of that little piece of french turd,
I used to have 2 Vw polos both on a H plate mk3's.one was a G40,and the other was the fox, both coupe's and the 1.0ltr was a brilliant little thing I prefered that more than I did the G40

Younger daughter's Renault Clio......what a heap of poo......on top of which I found it impossible to achieve a comfortable driving position.
It was a used car 13yrs. ago when she was 17yrs. old but it was what she wanted.....teenagers know best......having said that my elder daughter's Peugeot 205 was a cracking little car and a hoot to drive.

A badly converted LPG 230CE, black with black leather, had everything going for it, but the LPG use to blow-up quite often

Rear suspension tore itself apart..
It wasnt even a powerful car..
I took it to be sorted and the garage told me what was wrong without even coming out to look..
He said its common. The problem is that the area where the suspension is joined to the body is the guage of Tin..
It literally tore the metal like you would tear the lid on a can of Sardines..

I had a vito that kept breaking down, and needless to say rusting.

Vauxhall vans ever since, no more worries of rust or unreliability.

just wait untill the injectors, fuel rail, leak off pipes start to fail,oh an the maf decides its had enough. when I worked for Vauxhall the amount of these failures that we used to see on these would surprise you. its not even the vx engine

It has to be level pegging between a Lancia delta and an alfa 156......both the biggest pile of dog do I ould ever have brought......to be fair I stuck with the alfa a little longer so if a clear "winner" was to be selected it would have to go to the lancia....\

Good man. Question. How do you get 150bhp from a 2.9 V6? Mine lost 4th gear. Great. Sold it as soon as it was fixed. Piece of rubbish.

Citroen Visa may have been crap, but a well cool car!!!

2001 Jaguar X-Type 3.0 V6 Petrol. It was just constantly breaking all the time, not to mention, it is not the best looking car out there (not as bad as the S-Type). The gearbox in mine was faulty and slow - the worst automatic I have ever come across. To be honest, Jaguars today are much better and I like them very much. However, my Jaguar was conceived in the Ford era; so don't expect anything like British luxury. I have no idea why I bought that. In the end, I gave up and switched to MB for a C320 CDi. Much better.

I do remember one event was where the gearbox would not change gear at a set of traffic lights, so, I was stuck in third and not really moving when they switched green. In the end, I pulled over and the car was towed away and sent to Jaguar and "fixed"... Which it never proberly was.

What a shame. I was very dissapointed.

1956 MG Magnette - horrible car. Engine leaked so much oil it was a two-pint bottle of Essolube (cheapest available) every time I filled up with petrol. It was designed to go wrong. If the petrol attendant (Yes - that long ago) put the wiper blades back the wrong way round they jammed next time it rained, with the result that the steel worm in the wiper motor stripped the plastic gear wheel so the wiper blades stayed where they were. I got so fed up forking out for new gears that I kept a 12" ruler to hand so that I could reach out and flick the blades past the stripped bit and at least see where I was going every minute or so.

Clutch cylinder gave up the ghost without warning one night when I went back to the car. Ever tried driving without a clutch? It's getting going that's the worst bit - especially out of a car park!

Fuel pump in the boot would often stop without warning and for no apparent reason. It could be re-started with a good clout with a spanner but you don't want to be doing that on a motorway or a fast road in the dark. In the end I hung the wheel brace on a piece of string so that as the car went along the brace swung about and occasionally knocked against the pump. That did it.

That's only scratched the surface but it upsets me too much to think about it. This was, of course, before the MOT started. I should imagine that whoever it was unloaded onto would have driven to the nearest scrappie in despair. I traded it in for a Cortina on e dark winter night - now there was a car!
