Hi,
Just wondering if I could get my insurance down abit.
Was thinking on classic, is the car too new? Anyone recommended?
I'm just 25, partner 35, 1998 e300 td. It's second car, so 5000mls/yr would be ok. Paying £800 a yr now.
My 2.5d 190 only cost £311 a yr, it's a big jump!
Thanks in advance

Insurance companies have different rules on age of car for classic policies.

Suggest you google "classic car insurance" which should bring up comparison sites specifically for classic car insurance. Fill in details and see what comes up.

I got mine through Lancaster (via a comparison site) for £66 a year!

I was looking for classic insurance for my AMG and was,nt quite old enough to fulfill classic status with the half a dozen or so insurance companies I tried and mine car is the same age as yours 1998.

I think the car has to be 20+ years old, I got mine on classic ins last year but was not able to do it the year before.

Thanks all, the bloke I bought it off said he had classic ins at £120 with it, just found the piece of paper this morning saying 'footman James' so will try them. He could have been telling porkies though

The other snag is as you wait for the car to become older, you become older in the waiting process, then they get you for being too old but the car is fine :(

I had an e30 325 I sport in 2004, the car was 15 years old then and qualified for classic insurance, if memory serves me correct at £175!
I can remember having a conversation with the insurance agent that not all cars qualify at 15 years, some need to be 20 to qualify! I can't remember the makes she told me now though!

Most insurers who do "modern classic" insurance will only cover you if the car is at least 15 years old. Some say they cover from 10 years old, but this is only for selected vehicles and not just anything.

I couldn't get modern classic cover on the SL320 I purchased in May last year because it was only 14 years old at the time, but I was able to get a limited use policy which was the cheapest solution as I didn't have a second NCB to use. When it comes up for renewal later this year I should be able to get the modern classic cover which I am hoping should be a lot cheaper.

I'm not sure how you will do getting modern classic insurance on an E300TD as the W210 is generally not regarded as such and at least some of the Insurers will exclude it on this basis. If you can reduce your usage down to <3000 miles/year this will also help with some of the providers.

Yep, not regarded as a classic by insurers, actually very disappointed at their evaluations of the car £500/600! 2gether do a policy for cars that become 15yr old during policy, fully comp 41 a month or £400, cheapest I've found just gunna check fine print first!

Once the car's 15 years old we can do this for about £280 but at 14 years old the car just sits outside our modern classic criteria. Maybe next year?

Feel free to get in touch, it's unlikely we'd look at a classic policy but we insure many customers with second vehicles.

Or our number is 03303 331250

Thank you

I got mine with Adrian Flux for £277 with 5000 mile limit and its an N reg w202 which isn't bad. Nothing mentioned about classic though. Iv'e been with Flux for a few years and always found them to be good lads and that's with both the Merc and the import FTO.
