Hi guys. I recently got a 220cdi, was fine for a week but now it wont start or crank. At first I suspected the ecu to be at fault due to esp and abs warnings plus the engine fan running at full speed. I tested the ecu connections and found no voltage to the ecu at all. I then tested all the wiring and found continuity to all wires from the front sam unit. I noticed some corrosion on a couple of pins and opened up the front sam unit and found it full off corrosion. I fitted a new unit but the fault is still the same, no start, no crank and no power to the ecu. I have tested all the fuses including the alternator fuse and all the fuses in the front and rear pre fuse boxes. All are good with a 12v supply and 12v both sides. Plugged into 2 machines and the only code thats coming up in the electronics is 9081 'Terminal 61 open circuit' .
From what I can gather terminal 61 is the alternator D+, I have checked the wiring and it shows continuity.
Only other faults in the system are can communication faults from where the ecu is not powering up. The main battery has good voltage and the starter battery has good voltage. I have also checked and cleaned all the earth points.
Any help is appreciated as im scratching my head now. Thanks for any help in advance :)

Re the batteries the front one is only a top up one, the rear one drives the starter. Is the engine fan still running when you turn the key, do all the other electric come to life when you turn the key.

Was the SAM a new one.

The engine fan runs when the key is on. All the other electrics work fine, all the correct symbols light up on the dash as well. It was a brand new Sam from Mercedes, I also coded it with the scanner as well.
Cheers :D

You will have to read out all the fault codes,,,could be engine ECU,water in BAS control, an EIS fault

.... I fitted a new unit but the fault is still the same, no start, no crank and no power to the ecu...

Then you know what to chase, the power supply to the ECU.

Possibly Malcolm (super helpful chap) will be able to send a wiring digaram?

This is where STAR is so so helpful. Straight into EZS, actual values, check drive authorisation and CAN high and low, but I would expect it to see everything as ok. When an EIS goes down, it doesnt usually run the fan, in fact I cannot recall having one which has ever done so. You have a new front SAM and providing that has been coded correctly all should be ok there. Did you replace the pins in the wiring plug? If these have corroded it wont make a good contact so maybe you should think of repairing this if you haven't done so?

For me, the fact that the cooling fan is running flat out suggests an engine ECU issue or wiring to the ECU. If the engine ECU loses its coding, fails or something in its running proceedure is changed and it shuts down the cooling fan runs flat out.

As Steve above, the engine ECU can have a baring on the fan running all the time, or if the fan is not coded and the ECU cannot find it.

We have been specifically told that there is no power to the engine ECU.

Personally, I would be fixing that first.

Really sorry for the late reply. I was away over christmas and didnt get chance to get back on the car till today. Thanks for the helpful posts. :)

I have power both sides of fuse 65, but nothing to F43,F44 and F57

Plugged into the scanner and rear the fault codes, also checked the EIS in live data and it appears to be sending a start signal and recognises the key fine

Here is the list of fault codes from all modules with faults.

EGS-
2311 - One or more messages from the ecu are not available on the CAN bus
2312 - Same as above

ESP/ABR -
5B16 - Test control module N47-5 (ESP, SPS and BAS control module)
4R42 - No description ??
5358 - CAN communication of the engine control module is faulty

SBC -
6495 - Check wake-up procedure of control module A7/3n1 (SBC control module)

SAM-DR
9081 -Signal cable (terminal 61) has open circuit (term 61 signal improbable)
9033 - There is a malfunction in component A7/3n1 or the line to the component has a short circuit to ground or open circuit.

BCM-
9051 - Consumer shutoff stage 1
9050- Consumer shutoff, stage 2

ASSYST -
9204 - Control unit ASSYST is not receiving any messages from the engine compartment CAN bus

ASSYST-P
9204 - No description?????

AAC-
9021 - Test DF signal of component generator

Thats all the fault codes in the system at the moment. The only wiring diagrams I have are for the power supplies, but nothing on where the power to the ecus come from after they go out of the Fuse65

It looks to me like the EIS is not switching all circuits

Relay 'L' supplies power to fuses 43/44/57, so check there next - if no power in circuit 30 socket for relay, you are missing power supply from F33f78 in boot (hiding under panel ahead of battery).
If the other live is missing, look to F34f42 (fuse box on end of dash).

Right, Ive just removed relay L and checked for voltage. I have batt voltage on the middle pin of the relay which is numbered 5 but nothing on any other pins. Ive checked the other relays which are the same part number and have batt voltage on pin 5 and pin 1. So im assuming the pin 1 is the problem with no voltage. Ive checked F78 and F33 and have 12v both sides of the fuses and have 12 v on F42 but it doesnt appear to have a fuse for F34

I am fighting here with my lousy eyes in reading the diagrams, I will try again today and see what I can find on F42.

I do not have the info on this computer, so hard to see the screen.

OK you have a voltage on one pin, thats ok in the fault condition as that voltage would be switched when the relay was energized.
See what I can find later

My only knowledge of this is is that if SCN coded ECU is replaced it comes coded now from the factory, in my case mine worked just fine but when on STAR it does not know its there. Going directly to that ECU nothing will come up for it
