I think Id prefer to have my love spuds removed by a rabid dog rather than part with £3500 of my easily obtained dosh for that pile of monkey poo.

But it will be a future classic.

Many
As a former Renault fan many years ago - Renault 25's which I converted to diesel, I would still have a soft spot for some of their models.
A good friend of mine who has remained loyal to Renault drives the diesel version of the Vel Satis - has it now for six years, which is twice as long as he normally keeps a car. He loves it and has had NO problems at all.
I have driven it quite a few times and must admit the comfort, sturdiness, and build quality is very impressive.

Regards

Bill

Interesting he has had no problems. They're not known for that, especially the diesels! Hence the appeal of the 3.5 which is a Nissan unit from the 350Z.

I think they are great!

Had a Renault 18 for about 5 years and it was one of the most comfortable cars I have ever owned. Wife (now ex) blew the bleeding engine up and so I started my big adventure with the magic star on the bonnet and have never looked back :D

Although I'm a fan of Peugeots, I wouldn't touch a Renault with a bargepole.

And to describe it as "the French Rolls Royce" would make even Frenchmen laugh.

I'd say go for it.

When did you last see another one? There is definitely something to be enjoyed in driving around in something different. The badge snobs will say don't do it.

Take a good dose of brave pills and wade in - you only live once!

Good French cars are magnificent...the opposite an absolute nightmare.
My father had a fabulous Renault 16 and a girlfriends father a DS, both so far head of the rest of the mass market. Paradoxically one of my managers back in the nineties made having a Citroen XM a resignation issue so we let him have one and made him keep it for the full 80000 miles, which took about 5 years!
If I hadn't just MOT'd the CE I might just have taken a punt on this Vel Satis, its just such an interesting prospect if its a good one and lets be honest it's 6 months depreciation on a £20k Repmobile.

Had a bunch of R5 GT Turbos and a Gordini turbo as a kid, now they were great cars. So I would never dismiss Renault. But this ? Not my cup of tea.

I had a laguna 3ltr.Very comfortable and the only problems I had was 2 new coil packs and a window regulator.Cam belt change was going to cost upwards of £500 so got rid .Quite economical cruising at 70 mph it showed 39 mpg as against the merc which shows about 35 mpg.

I had a 3lrt v6 clio for a while and loved every minute of it, just bought it at the wrong time of year. (255bhp, RWD, very light and short) i would go round corners and then the car wanted to go round it the other way even if i didn't . i like the difference of the vel satis and for that price it will be a good work horse.

I'd say go for it if you think you can get it past your wife :D
