Hi All,

53-reg s211 E320cdi AG. 170,000 full history.

I got a the phone call this evening!

The car used to get stuck in gear on kick down to start with. This carried on for a month or so. If you turned off the engine and restarted it would be fine.

On Christmas Eve the car went in to Limp home mode and the gearbox was stuck in 2nd gear. The car went into Star Motors, who have been brilliant on the 2nd of Jan.

They changed the Speed senor, oil and filter a couple of months ago due to another problem and this week they have tried changing the valve bodies etc.

Well that did not fix the problem. When you kick down the car gets stuck in gear and then you have to limp home!

Now a full rebuild is going to cost £2000 including TC.

After having spent over £1400 already on suspension, gearbox, boot latch and other bits within the last couple of months.......I feel gutted.

I also have an sbc that will need doing soon as well!

your at the " gotta carry on stage" loads more life left in her...yes the SBC ticking timebomb plays on my mind a little BUT if it was my car i would just carry on and fix her up...cheaper than a new MB;)....is there any hope of getting a used gearbox?..bit risky i know...but you never know:shock:....and then just fix the SBC when ya brakes go:D

i know its totally GUTTING:(....i would be too!... but i wouldnt scrap the old girl because of it...want to get her up to the 500k mark at least before that ever happens:lol:

I know you are right Paul.

She still looks like new! No kidding, most friends thinks she has 70k not 170k on the clock. The interior and exterior are almost like new!

Just a little gutted that I purchased a right Lemon as the "brake service" light came on after about 10 days or so.

It cannot be reset and will need to be changed at a cost of £1100+ at some point soon.

BUT....you are right, better than buying a new MB E-class and once this is all done, should give me another 170k miles easily!

Just got to max the credit card next week though! After Christmas, this extra large expenditure is definately unexpected.

IceBoy

PS. once this is done, it will have had a complete suspension overhaul which cost over £700, Gearbox rebuilt and TC at £2,000, other niggly bits at £500...should drive and behave like a new car!

things can go wrong at any time so dont beat yourself up about the warning light coming on after 10 days..... when i brought our 211 it already had the warning light displayed:lol:...it has had the software update so fingers crossed it will hang on a while longer:shock:....would it not be worth getting yours reset so it doesnt hit the limit before your ready?,,,,,,,EDIT....Just read you cant do that.....gently does it!!

we spent a bit getting ours uptogether but all well spent...want to get the front shocks sorted this year as there feeling pretty tired now:lol:

if she all up together other than those jobs you will have years and years of enjoyment from your 211:cool:;)

see you at a meet sometime and you can see what 291,000 looks like:cool::lol:

Poor CAN connections on the Gearbox ECU can cause the 722.6 box to lock up

I had a SAAB that kept locking up and this was where the casing had gone porous, and the aluminum was powdering, this also why many of the insides of engines and boxes are painted

Is it cost effective changing bits ?would it not be cheaper and easier to take it to an auto box expert??because lets face it there is a difference between a mercedes specialist and an auto box specialist

dont mercedes specialists then;)....just pullin ya leg Malc;)

Auto gearboxes are a special subject, I could rebuild any engine or manual box, also any differencial to a high standard, but Auto boxes are a specialist line. It is the ease and speed that a specialist work Paul

No cost involved, it was substituted for a known good valve body to eliminate a sticking valve.

So do we, our gearbox man used to teach these at the mb school at Milton Keynes and knows them inside out too.

Thats nice to know :D In my case thought the valve block was cleaned and changed, tiny particles from the casing blocked the block again after a few miles, turning off and re starting it would go for a few more mile and then lock up,, I had a new casing in the end and it was fine
