:(

Hi there
My wife’s car 1999 C180 had a break light fault and was on all time. This normally is break light switch, so ordered new and replaced. Now cannot shift auto box from P.

BAS & ESP came on and off and are now off

Replaced with old switch to check not faulty switch same problem now with old unit installed, no gear shift, checked all fuses all look ok.

I have not taken car of drive but also noticed that there is no P on dash and when using pen to unlock shift there is no dash indicator as to gear selected.

Any ideas.
Many thanks cheers

How about this one, my C240 flywheel sensor failed, stopping when hot then ok when cool for short time. Spent 4 hours getting to local garage who said could do it with verbal quote; 4 days later said could not do job, 4 hours to get home. Ordered part and did job my self after ordering correct tools but took 4 days as is a pig to get out and replace plus wrecked hands doing it. LOL

Did you set the switch correctly as the speed signal is now missing or killed somewhere

The probe of new switch must be extracted before installing; it will self adjust when pressing pedal. I think now the sensor does not detect that brake is pushed, and it is not releasing shifter.

Nothing to link the lack of display with the BL switch, more like a selector module failure, which is not uncommon.
Or, possibly, you have somehow blown the fuse for the module...

Was it from MB? I ask, because the BRAKE light switch for EmilysMum Smart (it's the same switch as some Mercs) came with fitting destructions!

Just read it again from post 1 and I see that you have no P in the dash.

The gear sector needs to know the info from the speed signal, the brake lamp switch also relays this info, now I wonder if the faulty brake lamp switch has blown the selector ECU.

I will take a look to see what is on there

Sorry to correct you Malcolm, and risk the wrath, but...

The selector does not need a speed signal to display the letter on the dash.
Yes, it needs a speed signal for the R/P lock and probably other functions, but no reason to look for a speed signal fault here - this is a stuck selector.

The brake lamp switch definately does not relay any information about speed signals.

A faulty brake light switch cannot blow the selector, possibly a fuse, but not the selector module.

Update:

Checked all fuses again could find none faulty, as said previous tried pen in slot to unlock shift, however, doing this before I did not try to move car just went through gears. Today decided to drive car by unlocking shift and then found no reverse just seems to pull the revs down but no movement, forward seems to pull but as front is against a wall have not tried driving forward yet, will need to push back to allow me to drive out.

Have to assume selector gone, shame as car v good nick for 1999 C180 car and was purchased from member on this site 9 months ago.

Left car for about 10 days having removed old wile waiting for new and cannot believe changing brake light switch caused problem

Am I correct selector or any other possibilities ??

Will look for used or new if cheap enough to replace unit and look at doing my self as I don’t consider large bill from garage to be value for money.

Many thanks all

I'm sure I once found a picture breakdown on fixing a gearbox selector and posted it on here
