Hi, I have a December 2005 CLK CDi 220.

Had it for two months and am very impressed. It went in for a remap a few days ago, and before it had a health check and RR run.

There is a power dip around 2300 to 2700 rpm and it shows the error code 2632 "chech charging system : charge too high".

A little research suggests first course of action is to clean out the EGR valve, then process to check cat and DPF.

I would therefore be veyr grateful if anyone could answer the following :-

1. Although the EGR can be cleaned, is it better to just blank it off?

2. Does the car have a DPF, or is it just a standard cat?

3. I'm told as it's a diesel the car can pass MOT without Cat, so if this is blocked or causing problems can you just use a decat pipe?

Car runs great apart from this power dip and makes the power and torque it should elsewhere.

Any other suggestions welcome as I need it to tow my track car :)

Many thanks,
Scott.

A 2005 car is unlikely to have a dpf. If you're unsure then search on here for a VIN checker link.

Was the fault code read by STAR or a generic reader - some codes are year and model specific?

Has the fault only started to happen since the remap has been carried out

Hi, thanks.

The fault was present before the remap, it was brought up in the health check and RR graphs showed it, it occurs between 2300 and 2700 when you accelerate fully, it won't show under partial acceleration and runs full boost spot on above 2700 and belwo 2300.

It is a little worse after the remao as the car runs a little extra boost now so hits the limit and the ECU cuts the boost which causes the dip spike in the graph.

First reader was a small hand held one, not sure if the second reader he borrowed was a STAR, it logged real time faults, let you clear codes, was about laptop size.

^^ As andy, charge too high means ( I think ) that the ECU is seeing too high boost & backs off the ECU.

As for the DPF, my old bus is an "E" on a 320cdi, yup, it has a damned DPF

clean tailpipe = DPF

Sooty = nope :D

it may be the mapper has not altered the overboost setting in the ECU, I'm not familiar with the ECU setup, some just use a crude pressure switch / sensor that just gets recalibrated.

hi yes the issue is the ecu is seeing overboost just at abut 2500 revs and backs it off, but then boost is ok before and after that point.

I'm ruling out injectors, actuator, turbo as otherwise the problem would be at all revs.

Reading round so far seems to suggest a clogged EGR valve or restricted cat can cause this particular symptom, and possibly a DPF if the car has one.

Actually, those will cause lower boost pressures, not higher.

If you have the original service book with data card, DPF is code 474 - no code = no DPF.
Also, you will have a sensor mounted immediately to the rear of the air filter housing on this car if DPF is fitted (and should have oil sticker for low ash oil too).

Thanks, will take a look. I would have thought blocked cat would cause higher boost pressure as it created greater pressure on the output side and thus slowed air down out of the exhaust side and made it easier for pressure to build on the inlet side.

Obviously I appreciate your knowledge on this as I only really have experience of rotaries and four pot Jap turbo engines! :)

What would cause boost dip at 2500. RR graph show straight line for torque from about 1500 to 4000 rpm, with a sudden dip from 2300 down to 2500 back at top at 2700, torque goes from 230 lb/ft to 180 at trough of dip.

Is there a guide to how to remove the EGR for cleaning or is it just the two obvious bolts?
THanks.

THanks will give it a try, didn't want to come off so wasn't sure if it was more complicated or just needed a bit of force :)

The EGR was cleaned yesterday, was apparently filthy and not even operatign properly.

The good news is the problem is 80% gone now, but am trying ot work out he last 20% :)

The VIN is WDB2093082F184104

Can anybody tell me what that means? I assume the lack of 474 means no DPF?

Thanks,
Scott.

Did this ^^ not help?

Data card in back of service book BTW, and the chassis number does not contain a DPF specific code.

I can't see any "low ash oil" sticker and there was no obvious sensor immediately after the ari filter housing before the AFM.

Nope, sensor at REAR of air filter housing, not front.

Nope, sensor at REAR of air filter housing, not front.

Thanks for that, had a look today, the back of the airbox opposite to the bulkhead is just flat and can't see a sensor anywhere.

Car runs much better after EGR clean so just weighing up whether to remove it all together.

Will probably get the cat knocked out at next service as well, can only help I'd imagine. This is the first diesel I've had but all previous petrols I have always decated.

Not sure if the CLK was ever fitted with a DPF a standard. Certainly in 2005 and as late as 2007 it was an option only, I doubt they would fit one as standard after that as it would then be an outgoing model due for replacement.
