Hi all,

I was out in the old mans E220 CDi (170 BHP) today and I was looking at the temperature gauge, despite a good 30 min drive it didn't go above 80 degree's, it sat about 1 or 2 bars below.

Is this too cool for this engine or given the cold temps we have had lately it's about right?

I then drove the car on the way back an gave it some beans and it rested on 80 degree's a bit but settled back down to about 2 bars below.

Also another note, how should these things shift when giving it some beans? the gearbox and engine do seem quite responsive and you feel it drop a gear or 2, is this the norm?

Any advice appreciated, thanks

A couple of bars means about 60c

Probably needs a new thermostat - quite common.

For my car, it's A6462000015, which includes the gasket. If you post your VIN we can check EPC for you.

I replaced mine yesterday -- car was hovering between 70 and 80 deg C on long runs. With the new 'stat, it runs at a steady 90, and first indications are that economy is improved.

Replacement is fairly easy on the OM646 -- you need an E10 Torx socket and a 6" extension bar, both available from Halfords.

Hi Troon,

The VIN is WDB2110082B059999

I spoke to a specialist today and I was advised they should not run hotter than 90? :S

I'll keep an eye on it, I take it you bought yours from a Dealer?

That's the correct part number then. The thermostat should keep the temperature at 90-ish. Mine, like yours, was running a couple of bars below 80.

I bought it from Inchcape's online store.

Thanks for your reply Troon.

Given the cold temps in the winter should the engine reach 90 Degree's regardless albeit a bit longer time wise?

How many bars above 80 does it sit now?

Two bars above 80 and two below 100, which I assume to be 90°C. It got there in nine minutes from start this morning, driving gently in 1.5°C ambient; and did not move off that position throughout my 50-mile commute.

I have half my radiator blanked off, but I'd still expect it to reach 90°C.

95 degrees is a bit too close to boiling point for me or is this the highest point it gets to on hills etc? at your regions temperatures Jorge. I take it in your dry climate dust is possibly a problem in your region? if so make sure radiator fins aren't clogged with dust and maybe a cooling system flush would do no harm either. You could try a lower opening temperature thermostat if one is available.

Boiling point is increased with antifreeze so 95’ shouldn’t be an issue
