Looks like mine has started doing this. Drove down to Devon Monday, 100 miles. From Monday until today just been doing 4 mike's to and from hotel, so just 8 a day. Is that enough to cause a Regen? Cars was sitting at 800 rpms.

Won't regen until it gets to normal working temperature, which in 4 miles, won't have happened.

I wouldn’t expect a regen in such a short time after your 100 mike jaunt which will have ensured a regen I am sure...

I sometimes drop a couple of gears on the motorway just to keep the revs high for 10 mins (I don't have a dpf , so no regen) just gets everything working nicely .
Don't do what I did a few years ago on a 5 hour journey , I dropped the gears on the motorway , stuck it on cruise and forgot about it for 2 hours  .

Woops. My engine was sat at 800rpms for a while, in the end I was parked up and just switched off.

Engine at 800 rpm at idle is a good indication. You can open the door and see if there is a heatwave from the bottom coming out. That is another good indicator.

A regen can be triggered at any point, even during a 4 mile journey. As long as the coolant temp is over 60 indicated, it will start a regen as needed.

Do not bother dropping gears and all that bull. The car manages all that for you. You might notice a change in the engine/exhaust note, it will be more throaty. The car will keep the gears till nearly 2k revs before changing up.

All that said and done I would run the car till the regen completes. Don’t want to interrupt it too many times as it might throw a wobbly in the end. Depending on your speed it should not take more than 20 mins, maybe around 15 on open roads at constant speed.

Thanks for the advice.

You can tell when they regen when:
Car holds a lower gear for longer to keep the revs up.
Idle speed increased.
Smell, fans on and heatwave from under the car as Filipov says.

Thanks, is the engine just increasing exhaust heat by increasing revs to remove the build up?

I had a c220 cdi that the local Merc chaps forced a re gen on as it was in limp mode, I recall the grease monkey telling me it injects fuel directly into the dpf which burns off the soot,I remember seeing the temperature read out on the star machine at well over 650 c !!!

Sounds clever stuff, thinking about it, I did recall an odd smell earlier, must have been that. I'll pay attention tomorrow.

Does make you wonder why they don't simply include some form of "Regen in progress" warning light or display message?

I suppose they want the user to be unaware that it is happening.

Including a warning light on the dash might send most everyday drivers into a panic that something is wrong with their car. Too much hassle for what it is and not enough people educate themselves as to what all the lights mean.

It took around 45 mins this morning to do this. Yes, there was heat and a burning rubber smell. Doesn't drive as smooth and does hold onto the lower gears.
Back down to 600rpm now.
Cheers

I have had the exact problem recently. A burning smell and higher idle speed
