An old B-Class.
When my wife first got her B-Class she had the regen noise (I was away). She took her car to MB (Wakefield) 2 or 3 times & the numpties there couldn't tell her what was going on (because by the time the car got to the dealer the regen was over) and one even had the cheek to tell her that it is a crap Renault engine. (I believe that it is a Renault engine).

At the time, her max trip was 10 to 20 minutes - now that my son has moved 45 minutes away and the trips are longer - no issues.

I have had the exact problem recently. A burning smell and higher idle speed
It’s not a problem, it’s designed to do that and entirely normal.

It’s when it won’t do it that you have a problem. Otherwise it’s just the DPF regenerating. The heat and smell can be a bit off-putting but entirely normal.

Driving in a lower gear than needed, less than half a tank of fuel, heavy braking or accelerating , dpf not around 100% full, all seem to be things that will not allow a regeneration !
Had mine force regenerated due to a failed sensor so dpf got to 400% full.
Been checking it lately and it was 33% due to many very short journeys..
Got colder and my journey times did not increase, but in sports mode and driving a lot more enthusiastically (when engine is warm) and now only 7% full !
Solution seems to be put your foot down when accelerating away! lots more fun to be had, diesels love being worked hard and its enough to keep the dpf clear without doing longer trips for regenerating !

Does the w212 or most Mercs show you how full the dpf is?

DPF regen on a 4 mile journey ? I don't think so.

and pretty much anything else going on with yr car !
I wonder how many drivers have no idea what the DPF is or what it does? Suddenly when you become of aware of these things, you get paranoid about them!

I have owned my C Class for 2 years now, never felt it do a regen.

Prior, I owned an Insignia for 5 years and never felt that do a regen either.

Good point, never felt the insignia do on, but the 350 is unmistakable.

I had no idea that that such a thing as a DPF existed until I read about it on this forum. I had wondered what the occasional burning smell was though!

I too, have never knowingly experienced a regen and after reading all the DPF horror stories on the site, decided to look into it further. This morning I found with my icarsoft MB2 Scanner the following information;

upload_2019-5-26_10-37-59.png
upload_2019-5-26_10-39-42.png
upload_2019-5-26_11-0-40.png

Firstly, this level of information has to be available to everyone with an up-to-Date scanner which IMHO should be the first essential part of anyone's DIY toolkit for any vehicle manufactured in the last 20 Yrs or so.

The DPF PD of 0.01 bar doesn't have me worried as is almost insignificant, my Air Filter has a PD of 0.1 bar and is indicated as 4% blocked.
Fill Level of DPF however is a concern.
Soot and Ash levels of 2g and 0g actually make sense as soot is by nature a sparse and lightweight product.
'Total distance at last correction of ash content' Now this one has me a little confused, I took this initially as the last Regen and the mileage indicated is the same as my odometer which says it has never regenerated but why is the terminology referring to Ash and not a Regeneration?

There is a function to initiate a Regeneration while driving, in the Service, DPF Menu which I think I will do when it's next convenient to see if I can at least reduce that 45% Fill Level.

ah ! i will check that story on my 651. anyone know, can that be initiated from car controls ? or is that another "laptop " issue and like Tony i would just like to see it done , tho i sure dont trust that a clean test of dpf means its not going to give any problems or frankly that doing a regen will not mean an issue does not materialize 5 min after .kind of like a lot of timing change issues seem to crop up 5 min AFTER changing the oil and filter ?
