Hi All,

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere.

I have an electrical problem which so far I've been unable to resolve.

A couple of nights ago I was driving my SLK and noticed a loss of power in the engine when accelerating, a couple of minutes later the car cut out and I had no ignition power. The ignition lights then started to flicker on and off but trying to start the car would completely kill them. I still had headlights and hazard lights. The next day the car started but will not rev beyond 4000 rpm without hunting then loosing the ignition power and cutting out. I have tried another battery but still have the same problem. It is as though sorting is cutting the power to the ignition. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Noel

It could be a bad earth or bad electronic ignition switch.
I'd get it on Star to test the EIS.

We had a spate of cutting out on the wife's 1999 SLK230 last year. The K40 relay can often be the problem when some of the solder joints break down on the PCB. This module seems to to power a number of different systems hence the vehicle does funny things including cutting out, cooling fan operating flat out, etc. I popped the module out and re-soldered the joints which apparently can cause problems. Touch wood it's been fine since.

I should add no fault codes were presented or engine management light.

Is the car parked in a rodent free zone?

I had the same problem with my wife's SLK and it was the K40 relay. Resoldered and no problem since. See photos.

Thanks everyone. Just to let you know it was the multi pin connector on the ignition switch that was the problem. the contacts had opened up.
