As the title guys, it's done my nut in today. What are the best options?
I've read old threads saying helicoil and some say just use a a new m8 bolt and tap a new thread. Just not sure which way to go as most forums threads I read end up arguing.
If anyone has any input it will be much appreciated as I'm off the road at the minute as the bolt is just spinning

The accepted logic here seems to be to helicoil or timesert (being careful not to break through the water gallery under the bolt) then fitting new stretch bolts. Using an M8 can apparently cause issues where it loosens due to not being kept at the correct tension.

Thanks for the prompt reply.
My query now is the length of the helicoils I've been looking at all seem quite short compared to the monster bolt that goes in there.
I've seen a few small kits on Ebay that are for M8. Like this https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/323497073636

Is this ok? TIA

Hi James, Yes that kit would be OK stick to M6 Helicoil dont go down the 8mm thread route!
very easy to do with the thread stripped you can usually get away without drilling any bigger hole
just use the Tap supplied and then insert the helicoil using the special insert handle and then break the
tab off when the helicoil is just below the surface of the hole, then use a genuine 6mm mercedes clamp bolt
cheers Dave

Hello James, I looked at the same and noticed the wording on the EBay site "25 M6x1.0 Compatible Helicoil Thread" They're not the genuine article and I think for such an application I would tend to err on the safe side with the genuine product.

don't know the bolt size you are working with

to fix a stripped 6mm std metric coarse thread, a 1/4 UNF is a perfect tap job to make as good as new fixing that will be as strong as the original, you might need to slightly up a clearance whole for any fixings

Job is now completed guys so thanks for the help. I did run into a few problems though, the helicoil kit just isn't quite long enough neither the drill or the tap which made the job very awkward. I had a hunt round and foumd a kit made by Laser specifically for Mercedes Benz CDI engines, I ordered from Amazon and had it delivered same day (£102 and free Prime trial for delivery) and what a difference it made. The drill and tap are the perfect size and the thread insert is 3 times the length of a helicoil and so much better. With the new kit I had the job done in 20 minutes, it's so easy I would recommend it without a doubt. I know £102 seems expensive but my brother got me a quote of £140 for someone to come and do it so I'm happy. You get 5 threads (I know why not 6) but well worth it.

Thanks again guys

And that is exactly what happened, I've done 2 of them now and I've got 4 threads left so I'm sorted LOL
