Hi all , i have a question which starts with one of those statements . . . . . . . .
My father in-law . . . decided it would be a great idea to de cat his 05 E320CDI OM648 as i had broken the inside out of the cat on my 01 E320 CDI OM613 as it was stuffed,
so off he went & because he could not beat or drill out the internals due to angle of pipe he cut it open removed the internals & done the same to the DPF despite having no idea what it was.
I've done a VIN check & although it does not have option 474 diesel particulate filter it does list
926 EXHAUST GAS CLEANING WITH EURO 4 TECHNOLOGY & 983COC PAPER EURO 4 TECHNOLOGY W/O REG. CERT. PART II
What is the best course of action now as it is too smokey re instate the original cat & DPF or can it be mapped out

Removing cats on diesels causes them to stink so best left in place .

Dpf's - people have their different entitled views , "it's illegal" will be along shortly , and given the amount of posts about the hassle people have with them I can also see why people get rid .

I imagine the dpf pressure sensor would be giving fault codes as the pressure values will now be below threshold.

Of course the dpf perameters can be changed with remapping and a good map isn't smokey and can potentially pass the smoke opacity test to vin sticker value .

The dpf and cat can still fail mot if visable to the tester with obvious surgery but that might not be possible with the amount of covers in the way .

If car has no 474 SA code, it must have been retrofitted DPF... you need a star to check if DPF is coded to car (I highly doubt in case of after market filter), if there is no mention/measurement data about DPF you can forget it. Smokey may be due to boost leak/blocked cooler/bad turbo...

Euro 4 does not require a DPF to meet the standard. It only has a DPF if option 474 is present. My CLS320 which was Euro 4 did not have a DPF, hence the sooty exhausts. The E350 I had after that was Euro 5, so did have it fitted.

I'll just leave this here:

Under the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations (Regulations 61(7) and 61A(3)) and the Road Traffic Act 1988 (Section 42) it is an offence to use on a road a vehicle which has been modified in such a way that it no longer complies with the air pollutant emissions standards it was designed to meet.

The potential penalties are £1,000 for a car and £2,500 for a van, lorry or bus.

Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 (Section 75) it is an offence to alter a vehicle in such a way that the use of the vehicle on a road would be unlawful. A person altering the vehicle (if they knew or believed that the vehicle would be used on the road) could be found guilty of an offence under the Act.

Potential penalties are unlimited fines.

Early DPF's were an absolute nonsense. Whilst they reduced NOX to a degree, regeneration was carried out mainly by overfilling the engine so the exhaust temperature increased causing a burn inside the cat to clear the ash content. So any gains you had in filtration were then nullified by the fuel to clean it. Not only that, the additional weight of the DPF system etc caused the early Mercs to run a good 5-8mpg off the pace.

Back in 2009 I had 2 C220CDI's. A 2002 sport coupe with a 611 engine and an Estate with a 646 engine running a DPF. The wife and I did virtually the same sort of commute every day, hers being around 5 miles shorter than mine. The sport coupe had a combined average of 44mpg. The estate 38MPG. If I tickled the SC on a long run at 70mph I would regularly achieve 60+MPG. The estate I couldn't get past 48MPG.

The I had constant trouble with EML lights, regen issues, then it started dumping diesel into the engine oil from constant overfilling. On a normal commute, if a regen started to happen, it would drop from 38mpg to 33mpg. When the trouble started it would drop below 30mpg. After various sensor replacements and cleans to the DPF, the DPF was basically shot.

The most cost effective way was to remove it. Anthoney at GAD carried out a full remap, DPF and EGR removal. I removed the DPF but kept the CAT in place. The difference was huge. More power, lower revs when cruising and by far more economical. It regularly achieved a combined of 45mpg and on runs I was getting 60+mpg. I took that car to 250k miles and its still returning to my workshop today.

However, that was a very different period of time. Emission systems and diesel engines have moved on greatly since 2004 when that car was made. The latest technology with Ad-blue makes them highly efficient and cleaner burn. The g/km ration of the latest 220cdi that is in my W205 is cleaner than its C300 petrol equivalent and does double the fuel mileage.

Would I remove DPF's from any vehicle post 2009? No. The MOT laws now with emission control for diesels have changed and you are opening a whole world of trouble especially with running issues and as the poster above has mentioned, its now a criminal offence to carry out such a procedure.

Just a question; if car SA has no mention about DPF, isn't it legal to remove as well? Car is according the factory specified emission eqipment...

The early DPF systems were at least hardy.. our '05 S320 has the optional DPF and its still functioning at 250k...

My '09 C250 Cdi however often likes to miss its regens for no fathomable reason (plenty of driving in the right 'way' for a regen to happen) and pop the car in limp mode without a fault code registered, however i bought an ICarSoft and force a regen, then all is fine for almost exactly another year and then it needs a forced regen again.
The past 9 months though the car is dumping fuel into the oil, which has increased by 0.5l. I change the oil every 6months/8k roughly. Thats a job for tomorrow and to investigate a P047164 code 'Exhaust back pressure sensor'. I've been keeping an eye on the exhaust temps and it only regens once in a while, not all the time which might suggest a reason for fuel to enter the sump.

if yrs is a used car and you dump the dpf ,as in internals and it still passes the test one could just claim one had bought it like that and did not know it was by passed .yes/no ? i am not thinking of dumping mine, unless it becomes something of a ballache. however if gaskets/seals were not ,benz ,so expensive i would plan an 80k miles egr clean up , have seen many completely carboned up and would wish to avoid that.
