On most vitos etc, it needs to dropped a foot and attacked from the back. Depends on what cars its in.

Not too bad at all. Normally no more than an hour +parts

it would be an ML.... star plan that ,putting all the aggro jobs at the BACK of the engine...

Apparently done to reduce bonnet line and improve pedestrian safety ...

wot, not, a surprise .how about de f pedestrians simply stayin out of the road. frankly if i got knocked over whilst wanderin around in the road i would struggle to hold the driver to account, unless on a crossing. after all WOT the road for ?
so as a result i have to cut all my spanners and break my arm in 5 places to get at anything .. feel as strongly about push bikes (sorry wandering again ) if they want to be in the road ,let them pay some road tax as well..why am i paying to keep modifying the damn road for them ?
back to de om651. read lots of reports about them in states prior to getting mine, seems like all todays motors there are horror stories and good stories of VERY high miles and good towing reports on what they can and do tow, i am trying to find out what if any mods they are making to achieve this. i have a spare a class trans cooler and wonder if adding such into the circuit might be a good idea or not. more research into if or not its really ness required

Earlier I said I did some research before moving from my ill fated 642 Viano. Much research was done on here.
My conclusion, new motors are just too complicated. The designing now is aimed at causing us to be much more dependant on dealers or possibily a good Indie as they get past the three year mark, which will be any motor I buy.

I'm now driving a 2.1L with a 646, which is well proven and has been around, in pretty much the same engine design, since approx 1998.

While the newer versions of the Vito (651 engine) do look nice I'm pretty sure many more will become beyond economic repair than the 646 earlier, less glitsy, Vito.

For a large vehicle I'm pleased with the regular 42mpg (actual) I acheive. Not too bad for an auto.

I've still got the Viano 3.0 on the drive as I haven't the time to resolve the blocked DPF that happened less than 1 month after having new injectors fitted and the DPF software updated. All sensors were replaced and hours / days spent on it, thanks for your efforts there LK.
It's nice to go back to the less complicated 646, that runs.

yr dead right with the over complication statement its getting harder and harder to wriggle away from the dealers/stealer these days and often there is more knowledge, info on here than sme f the dealers seem to have. it just should NOT be so complex and expensive so it must be deliberate steps from the makers. trouble is how to choose between them .?

Prettiest car wins.
Reliabilty is an issue when reputation suffers, so MB, for example, have got away so far with statements like "well this is the first time we've seen this, but you didn't look after your (red) car paintwork properly, so don't come to us crying about a few bubbles. But we 'might' offer a little toward the cost"

Plastic gears and stretchy chains are the way it goes nowadays. I'm a dinosaur and happier with robust.

I phoned local mercedes (Western) for a price to do the work, they phoned me back and said it's not something that should need changed as they last the life of the engine! Want me to book it in for a diagnostic @ £75 plus vat per hour!

Have the chain tensioner changed instead of diagnosic, it should be fine afterwards.

A tight chain on possibly worn sprockets would worry me!

Not sure how MB dealer could diagnose within an hours labor if the top cover needs to be removed for inspection!

After reading all the comments I think I'm going to get my tensioner done. The cars done 123k and no rattle so far. Peace of mind.

Here's how my engine was sounding on a cold start. Now it starts very smooth after a chain tesnsioner change. The old tensioner at 185k miles wasn't closing properly.

Right just spoke to my mechanic and he said to change the tensioner the covers would still need to come off so the guide can be kept tight while the tensioner is off! Otherwise the chain may come too loose allowing it to jump a tooth?

Is this how yours was done gianton?

No, in my car the tensioner is attached on the engine and there’s no need to remove the engine’s cover. It was a 30 mins job.

Give me your VIN and I can check WIS how is it in your car.

Only the Vito left! W639/1 OM646

Likewise, and the reason I haven't upgraded is the horror stories I keep reading here regarding the timing chain and sprockets on the OM651.

When they put the OM654 in the Vito I might consider upgrading, if the forum hasn't slated it.
