Hey all

Had a few issues since taking ownership of my '10 E class 220 (S212).

Firstly, EML came on and flagged a cylinder misfire. Reset by dealer and told to monitor.

Secondly, EML came on again. Returned to dealer who allegedly sent it to a Merc specialist and the Star system didn't find a fault. ECU apparently updated and EML reset.

During these issues I could not note any issue with the way the vehicle drives.

Finally, yesterday I ended up with the vehicle a) failing to provide significant acceleration on throttle, b) coolant guage going from 80-100-120-90-80-120 etc etc.... essentially moving up and down throughout that range. This happened whilst the vehicle was running but also whilst the vehicle was parked up (as I was worried about causing damage) and in pre-ignition key position and c) when turning over to start the EML came on again. Finally the rad fans where running loud and strong when I stopped the vehicle and continued to do so for 10 or so minutes. Of course I am worried about a major overheating issue.

I can't see an obvious coolant leak coming from anywhere.

Does any one have any thoughts on what I can check, what the issue may be or further tests I could do myself before I book it in with a mechanic.

Thanks!

Is known that the plastic water pump can fail, sometimes with a leak, sometimes without.
The plastic impeller can break meaning the coolant isn't getting pumped around the engine efficiently.
Easy job to replace and new ones are metal, so more reliable.
Also may be worth replacing the thermostat, once again this item seems to be a problem.
Temperature sensors may be worth looking at, but I would've thought Star would've picked a fault up.

The gauges going all over the place and the loud rad fan indicates a CAN communication fault or implausible system value (especially if the car has no other symptoms of overheating!)

If no other symptoms of overheating, that would be the first place to look.

Is there anything I can do whilst the vehicle is parked up before I drop it into a garage to try and determine or fix either of the issues both of you have mentioned!

Thanks for dropping by and sharing the knowledge with me!

Unfortunately, without diagnostic equipment, it would be a stab in the dark.

You are welcome.

As Alex said, diagnostics would be good.
If it was me, I'd hook up my iCarsoft MBII v2 and go to real time monitoring of coolant temperature and watch the temperature to see if it's fluctuating.
Is your coolant up to level?

Sorry, yes coolant upto level (down a little from where I checked it a week or so ago, but marginal). I would not however rule out leaking coolant at this point.

I also forgot to ask about the outcomes of scenarios with diagnostics and checking the coolant temperature.

If the temperature variation on the diagnostics matches the gauge indicator on the dash what may that signify?

Vice versa if the diagnostics remains consistent whilst there is gauge variation what may that indicate?

Thanks again for the help and info!

Updates....car went to Merc specialist today and they pulled up codes for coolant temp sensor and two faulty injectors. They phoned the local main dealer who have said that injector work can be done by them free of charge as it was part of a recall. Does anyone have further information on the recall and what I can expect Merc to do on the issue?

In other news my diag scanner arrived today too!

Thanks

MB will replace all 4 injectors, I'm surprised it hasn't been done, as the recall was a few years ago now.

Fantastic news! Will it all be done at no cost to me? I will flag with them that it is odd it hasn't been done before as it had a Merc service history and was taken as a part ex by their sister dealership before being sent to a third party.

Interesting that MB are willing to cover something so long after the car was delivered..

That makes me wonder..would they cover the replacement of my faded walnut dash. I recall there being something about faulty UV protection on the dash and they were covering under warranty.

I would assume there is a difference between a recall and warranty though. (And the cost too...)

Yes, that is what worries me....will I actually end up forking out for the injectors to be replaced...?

No, the original set are faulty and somehow the car escaped the recall or the owner couldn’t be bothered as the car at the time was running ok

Spoke to main agent just now. Been informed that the injector works would otherwise be £1500 or so and it will be done on the recall FOC. Been quoted £12 for coolant temperature sensor but not got anywhere with labour charges.... Just waiting a call back to confirm parts are in and can get booked in tomorrow.

Will provide all further updates just in case others face similar issues!

Just had a call back from dealer...told me it could be a few weeks before parts are in! Not sure what to do from this point as do I have any entitlement to a vehicle from Mercedes in the mean time? I imagine not but reading historically they have offered servicing vouchers and vehicles for use to others in this scenario from what I can read....

Hi all,

Just pulled the fault codes from the vehicle, listed below. If anyone has further info? Main dealer has told me vehicle is ok to drive but I'm not convinced with the coolant temperature sensor. I've reset the fault codes for now

P02EE49The fuel injector (cylinder 1) has a malfunction. There is an internal electrical fault
P02EF49 The fuel injector (cylinder 2) has a malfunction. There is an internal electrical fault
P011602 Coolant temperature sensor 1 has a malfunction. This is a general signal fault.
P011664 Coolant Temperature sensor 1 has a malfunction. There is an unreasonable signal.
