Employer isn't laughing - it makes no odds to them. I'm not sure even they realised that the tax on the fuel was way more than the fuel itself! It's very common in the motor trade this scheme. However later in the year they are moving to a contributory lease scheme which I think will make a lot more sense and I may well go into that. As you "lease" your car off the company, and pay for that out of salary, no company car tax is payable - nor maintenance.

I've seen W216's for about 7k. W215's are about £3-£6k

I certainly can't afford £10k - but I do know cheap CL's is an oxymoron - what you save in purchase you'll certainly pay in repairs!

The other car I fancy that I can get for about £6k ish is a ML320CDi - they seem nice but not as luxurious as a CL.

Yup, you can re-assess every 12 months

Would cost you another 20% (and her 4%)

No she can't, provided there is a paper trail so a DD is perfect then she can't do anything.
Yup - make sure the info with any money sent over has "Child maintenance for xxx" attached - with that you have a papery trail - anything other than money sent direct and detailed as "Child Maintenance" isn't counted by CMS

W216 has higher running costs than a 215; ABC parts are MUCH cheaper on a 215 and there are more suppliers cropping up for them.

Well you have done your sums (there's a lot of big numbers involved !) , all down to personal choice now , especially as you are prepared to pay for running the CL .
I've had an E320cdi for over 7 years and have done 80k miles in it now . I'm struggling to think of what has gone wrong apart from normal wear and tear and servicing stuff ?
Glow plug relay £130 , self levelling sensor arm £30 , crankcase breather £60 . I think that's it :D

Fuel and running costs for my 215, includes full ABC rebuild and a wasted £3k service when I was ripped off by local garage.

Stop driving with the numbers holding you back, give yourself a bit of pleasure and allow the choice to be driven by passion rather than purely economics!
I have been a year waiting to find a replacement for my last mb, logic didn’t ‘cloud’ my decision process...

Enjoy the experience, you know it’s what you deserve ;)

I understand checking the numbers though as it's a big leap - I did the numbers when going from a Vectra 1.8LS to an E320CDI - because of MAR and a decent amount of business miles I had a very good life with that car :D:p

Yes the risk is all yours but you're an awfully long time dead - which is how I ended up running a 911 as my "company car" :p:D

My other choices (all back in 2012) were a CL500 or a Bentley, I went with the 911 at the time (along with the smart convetibubble for converting) ticked all the boxes for me :p:D

i think this could be my next car i'm liking the sound of a car that doesn't cost you £2000 + a year in repairs.

@Wighty spends so much time washing the paint away he's probably forgotten all the parts he's had to have fitted  :D:p

That's impressive to get 24 I can't see the total costs but it's not as frightening as I thought - I'm braced for 20-22 to the gallon really.

That CL500 on Autotrader looks a beautiful example - but you have to compare it with things like these:-

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2002-Mer...305586?hash=item41fbea3972:g:ZtQAAOSwd49brhhm

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mercedes...690536?hash=item2acde0d5e8:g:tqAAAOSwdEhc~k2E

(That will go higher)

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MERCEDES...491161?hash=item3b330bf159:g:TykAAOSwilJbYxpU ----- Seems decent value and a facelift widescreen model..... But I really want a black one...

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MERCEDES...491161?hash=item3b330bf159:g:TykAAOSwilJbYxpU ---- cheapests I've seen a new shape anywhere - a few miles and a few faults, but they sound minor enough...
