Hello,

I’m a newbie and frankly not a car geek, but I’ve had three ML270’s over the years so I must have a soft spot for them.

I’d love to know how to fix the irritating rattle that stems from somewhere in the boot (all three have had the same rattle!).

Mine is an old 04, still drives well except I think it’s getting Black Death as it’s getting carbon deposits under the plastic engine cover.
It also shakes like hell at 52mph, sometimes at around 60 and also at just over 80 not that I ever go THAT fast. .

Lastly it has knackered headlamp height adjusters which I’d love to know how to fix.

Other than that, I love the car. It’s s banger with rust in the usual places, but it’s a work horse. Drives nice on the motorway assuming you avoid the speeds it shakes at.

Oh... the fumes coming into the cab are “interesting” so I tend to put the air con on recycle... guess that’s to do with the Black Death?...

Hello all!

Welcome Tom, it doesn't sound ideal. I hope one of the more practical folk are able to advise. I'd be inclined to take it to a good MB indy and get some professional help with it. Best of luck anyway.

Hi and thanks,

I did try that, but the overall cost to get everything sorted was about twice the value of the car...
I’m kind of just enjoying it until it falls apart!

Hi Tom and welcome to the forum. I’m not a techie but I’m sure someone on here will want to help you rescue a much loved old banger! ;)

If you get nowhere in this “Introduction” section, it might be worth posting threads under some of the technical sections.

Edit... have just seen your other post in one of the technical sections - you beat me to it!

Welcome to the forum Tom, I wouldn't ignore the leaky injector seal(s?) too long, could get expensive.

Contractor that used to do some work for me had his ML270 go up in flames on the M4 because his injector popped out.... sprayed fuel over the hot exhaust and that was the end of his ML (Mercedes had helicoiled in the injector...)

The shaking is almost certainly tyre balance.,

You can confirm by borrowing a known-good set of wheels, or swapping them front-to-back..

You could have a dented or distorted rim that would still make the car shake, even though it has been balanced.

Generally, it's the unseen, inner rim that gets bent (because it it's unsupported). Get all 4 wheels off the ground and run the car in drive (slowly!) and check for eccentricity or rim damage

I can't think a competent wheel balancer wouldn't spot a rim like that.
