I can imagine. I gave up on a similar job in the Smart and just ran new wires end to end.
I nearly did that, until I saw how much of a greater pigging pig it was to run new wires through the door and into the bellows.

I decided to triple splice in 1.5mm2 very flexible hookup wire rather than butt up the original 4.0mm2; this was a pain in the proverbial due to the short door-side length to fix onto- and that the wire was conducting heat away from my soldering iron almost as fast as it could supply it.
Rather than butt joint I'd recommend stripping back and twisting the new wire over the old one to get a better contact. I'd also be using a gas iron for that job to get some heat into the solder so it flows well. I've also have slid some heat shrink u the cable as well to put over the joint once completed :)

Better than the 23.86mpg the r129 returned over the 370 miles through France...
(Not that I'm unhappy with that - it's only marginally worse than the 25.1 the r230 did over same journey.)

Not enough room in the area for a gas iron. It’s really tight in there. A bigger chisel tipped electric job would’ve been the ticket but you work with what you have...

Not enough wire to strip back and twist (and remember I was fitting 3 wires around the sides of a stripped & tinned stub end) so I ended up doing this:

o o

Heatshrink, 3 layers went over it all when complete. One over each joint then a sleeve over the whole lot.
