Watch out for grey & dark blue Audi's, catching you up quickly. They seem to have disposed of the unmarked BMW 5 series.
Last bridge northbound on the bend before the toll plaza, is a favourite.

I’ve heard plod sit in the middle lane @ 70mph in plain cars , waiting for someone to undertake them.

I am ex job not traffic, never heard of that one. They would leave themselves open to driving without due care or reasonable consideration, by not being in lane 1.

It's also not technically illegal to overtake on the left if I recall correctly.

I do a 1,000 miles a week.

Midlands at the weekend and then running between Berkshire > SW/London.

I have chosen a 2000 Volvo T5 after a fleet of these somehow managed to replace a couple of my other cars over years and the Volvo's don't skip a beat even at serious speeds and trackdays thrown in. One is now on 260,000 miles and is used by my mum to whizz around the midlands 3 times a week. That doesn't even use any oil or fluids between servicing!

I change the oil and filter every 5,000 miles.
10,000 miles is the same as above plus ALL filters and spark plugs.
30,000 adds a full gearbox oil change and coolant change.

What I find is, people trust garages and dealers to 'service' a car. Yet, simple things like fuel filters, air filters, in some cases oil filters are never changed (and now have stupidly long change intervals) and this impacts longevity. Just rip open a filter that hasn't been changed for a couple of services and see!

In my opinion, just stay on top of serviceable items, perform the good old fashioned 'weekly checks' under the hood, and you should be able avoid the cause of most silly problems and breakdowns resulting from owners ignorance.

The CLS is a diesel but, whilst I will barely manage 5,000 miles a year in that, it will get the oil and all filters etc done annually at the very least and gear oil done perhaps every other year.

yr not wrong, more than regular oil changes are the cheapest effective preventative maintenance you can do , even now when one needs a pump! thermometer! and fill tube to do it.

I recall a 'discussion' on the hard shoulder of the 'M6 toll' road, where the toll was collected by a private company that funded the construction, operation and maintenance of said road according to the sign at the roadside where we were stopped. The result of the conversation was to make up the lost time before rejoining the publicly funded M6 :geek::rolleyes::cool:

Not seen the sign since then. But only used the M6 Toll when the Caravan Club discount when towing was available since. The A road that runs alongside to the east is much quicker with less traffic when towing :D:D

Anyone know if there are any Static cameras on the Toll road ?
Or is it just the mobile vans and plain police.

Only in traffic when the nearside lane is moving more quickly. I would expect this to apply in 50 mph contraflows on the motorway.

With regards to cameras, I know I'll sound like a boring so and so, but, I find, it best to just sit back, chill and stay at the speed limit generally, urban and motorway.

Aside from static cameras that we are generally aware of and surprise scamera vans etc, its nice to know you're clean if you are not tearing along but, nowadays, I have also been told that ANPR cameras, are also used to catch speeders, so you may not be aware of having passed a camera that actually can determine your speed also.

No static cameras at all. Unmarked cars are the favourite mode, occasionally hand held cameras on bridges.
Just been reading in the local rag 15 cars done for speeding over a couple of hours last week on the M6 Toll.
Paper said all done by a hand held gun in an elevated position. That normally on a bridge on a bend about 2 miles short of the Toll Plaza northbound. They stop the offending cars at the Toll Plaza.

To be fair CMPG the motorway police in the West Mids do their best to keep the camera vans off their motorway bridges. It just slows the already heavy traffic. The only exception is in roadworks with fixed speed limits.

As per McDonald above it’s not the mileage it’s the time. I used to commute 13 miles to work (one way) it would take me 1 3/4 hours each way so 3 hours out of my day.

The longer distance will be better for the car as it will be all up to temp and running nicely

That's a horrific amount of time .

What it should be like .
