So, would anyone buy an "out of warranty" Merc hybrid? I don't think so. So second hand values will surely reflect that. Given what I've read on here, I'm not sure I would buy a new (in warranty) MB hybrid :(

Its not about "out of warranty", its about paying 50K for a NEW car that after 4 years will require another 15K to change its hybrid battery. Toyota recovers 91% !!! of their hybrid batteries as they are designed to last longer than the car where there are equipping.

Some news, i've took the car to a shop specialised in fixing and recondition faulty hybrid batteries. The car is there and tomorrow i will have a diagnostic and estimate. Just for comparison, my local MB dealer charged me 500€ for the initial diagnosis. I've asked if they could provide me with the data of the diagnosis and they told me no data could be provided as their diagnostic is based on multiple measurements of the hybrid components that lead them to the final "hybrid battery replacement needed" conclusion.

The shop where i took the car today charges 50€ for a diagnosis and actually share their diagnostic with the customer.... More to come soon.

Simple

Battery costs £1000
Sell to MB for £2000
MB sell it for £8000
Fitting costs are £2000[/QUOTE

whilst i have many useful bits of kit battery powered, i have none that last any length of time,it looks like electrickery cars are going to be the same, so unless i accept renewing my cars every 3/4 yrs ( makers game plan ) and i aint. such vehicles wont be on any of my to do lists.

Just got the reply from the shop. They charge 4500€ for the full service of battery reconditioning and they give a warranty of 2 years. I moved ahead and will post the final result here once i get the car back.

Glad you have sorted it, still a truck load of cash to shell out on a 4yo car because the batteries are knackered!!!!!

That is still an eyewatering bill. How on earth can these ecowarriors say that this type of this is economical. Beyond fathomable.

It's certainly economic for them and will continue to be until people learn how to work on batteries themselves. If I came into your garage with a thermic engine problem and you said sorry all engines no matter what the problem have to be replaced completely I wouldn't be around too long.
I've some experience of DC battery work, charging systems and looking at the videos the current (pun?) car ones they don't seem too different or complicated it would just be trying to find individual replacement parts.

Given you've just acquired it have you gone back to the seller?

I've tried to, unfortunately since i've imported the car from Germany, they are denying any responsibility. I have a lawyer there moving a legal process against the dealer as they should not be allowed to sell cars that have problems.

Process finished. Battery was successfully recovered, also the dealer that made the service to the battery explained how to avoid this in the future. This information should be relevant for current owners as MB seams to have no idea on their diesel hybrid technology.

According to the engineers, the degradation of the hybrid battery occurred due to inconsistent electric tension between the overall system that is composed of 3 batteries. As they explained all 3 batteries work together (start-stop, car battery and the hybrid battery) and in my case, the 2 (non-hybrid) batteries didn't had their full load capacity due to the car being stopped for months. When this 2 batteries are somehow "weak" there are no signs on the dashboard or any other signal that they need replacement but the overall hybrid circuit is affected causing electric spikes while charging the hybrid battery. This spikes are responsible for the degradation of the main hybrid battery and they happened because the 2 other batteries didn't have optimal charge values. If those batteries had been replaced before they showed this, the main battery would not have been affected.

To prevent this from happening, they recommend changing the 2 batteries every 2 years (they cost a couple of hundred euros each). I hope this can help others.

Luis, it is such a shame your initial experience of MB has been so poor and faceless. The glory days of MB have definitely gone, but in all they do still seem to make good cars in general. Hybrid and indeed electric technology is still so new, that its scared me off getting one yet. I will stick with my very 'environmentally unfriendly' V8 for the time being!! Hopefully, you can now start enjoying your car to its full potential.

That sounds to me that a software update is required to prevent spikes and alert the other batteries require attention.

First of all, very well done Luis on keeping your nerve and getting a fix even though you have had to fork out €4500 - but even that is €8500 less than MB wanted to screw out of you for a replacement! I sincerely hope your lawyer in Germany can get some results and at the moment at least anything that applies in Germany almost certainly still applies in UK as part of the EU as well.

I have to say that the situation with MB is utterly disgraceful - nothing less. The answer to the request for data as provided by the Mercedes "hybrid-expert" dealer that "....multiple measurements of the hybrid components" add up to an answer that the battery needs to be replaced in its entirety suggests that they are at best less than proficient in their field which is a totally unacceptable level of support on a vehicle in this price band - especially when a non-MB specialist can deal with it, provide a detailed report and solve the issue properly for 65% less!

Anyone who is seriously thinking of buying a MB Hybrid - from any supplier - MB dealer or not - would do well to insist on full extended warranty on the battery if it has had any period out of service. Also before the purchase of a pre-owned MB Hybrid, I should think it would be practical to have the the vehicle checked by the specialist company you used to solve your problem.

Finally, I'm sure we would all like to hear how the car performs etc once you have it back!
